What happened to those little bottles/boxes of detergent that wash a couple loads of laundry? I remember seeing them offered in stores in various brands and scents years ago. Now I'm only able to find Tide and Gain. I'd like to find the others so I don't end up with a stockpile of detergent when I decide to try new variants.

Likely more bother than they were worth.

Yes, back in the day product makers could attach samples and or a premium to a container, no bother. Supposed some did go astray, but still a bulk remained; no so much today.

Have seen shelf after shelf of Tide or other products cleared of attached premiums/samples; in a word, stolen.

Some were used by those that pilfered; however much ended up on eBay and other places. Where do you think all those offers for one, two, three, ten, or box loads of "free" samples come from?

No idea, but I sometimes have wished there was more variety with samples... It's mostly Tide, Tide, and Tide around here. I have seen Surf (one store--but now gone), and Cheer (one store).

I think, as Laundress has said before, the laundry detergent market is fairly mature.  With this fact there is a smaller need to get someone to try something new.

Otherwise sampling seems to be handled now mostly through coupons.  If there is a new variant of a detergent, you can usually find a free, or $$$ off coupon for that item.  Saves postage, packaging, and processing.

When Dynamo Liquid Detergent

Was launched a van went about our street (and one presumes others) putting little gift bags of detergent and a measuring cup (marked Dynamo with clearly indicated 1/4 indication. IIRC some local kids went around to homes where people hadn't gotten to their mailboxes and or front doors and stole the sample kit.

Our mother was not impressed with Dynamo, but I kept the measuring cup; still have use t all these years later. Took it when moved house after college, and it has travelled through three different homes since.

Of course truly back in the day you got a nice sized box of Tide or whatever detergent included with your washer. That shrunk down to a small packet, now you barely get a coupon for a few cents off.
