Turquoise/Maytag/Frigidaire Plus

Just talked to him again. He says he has been getting calls
back from people now that the auction has ended that want to
buy specific things. He only mentioned the Maytags, so don't
really know how much interest there is in the other stuff.
Said he was looking for $3000-$4000 dollars and was thinking
he would get more if he listed separately. Don't really know
about that. Arranged to call him back in a few hours. Would
cost $600-800 to pick it up. Don't know if shipping would be
any less.

What do you all think?

These *ARE* Around

If you truly want these ASAP, I wouldn't offer more than $250.00 for the set and see what the seller says. Look how many Maytags have surfaced this Summer alone!

If people truly want to sell items, they should start them low at say $9.99 and let the market dictate what they're worth. The Frigidaire unimatic set sold for just under $200.00 but the gentleman near me started his washer out at $350.00 and got no bids. I made him a side offer but he saw over 800 hits and thinks he has a gold mine.

Let's see - I got another unimatic washer two months ago, Graham got a unimatic washer & filtrator dryer last month, Jim just got a set yesterday, another one was listed on eBay last week - see what I mean?

And take the guy in Florida who has the pink Maytag set. He keeps on listing it (and paying the eBay fees based on the starting price) at $2,000.00 and gets no bites. These vintage machines *ARE* out there. It just takes a little effort to find them; but the end result is worth the wait.

I'm interested in all the appliances, not just the washer/dryer.
Second poster (Liam) thought they might all be worth $3000-$5000
making the comment about pink GEs that sold for $4000. Or was
he being facetious?

Those pink GE's that sold were NOS from 1957. Maytags are a different ball game altogether. Look at it this way....they started the auction at $1,000.00 plus put a reserve on it. Since the auction had over 500 hits but not one single bid, I'd offer $750.00 ($150.00 for each piece) for the whole lot, if that's what you are interested in.

Again, these items are around. This poppy frig worked but since the dealer couldn't even get $25.00 for it, he scrapped it.

No I was not being facetious. Its really hard to guess what vintage appliances are worth. I was basing my guesstimate on the fact that those pink GEs sold for over $4000, however they were NOS and quite a bit rarer then the Maytags. On the other hand six turquoise appliances in this kind of condition are rare as well, so its hard to tell. As we here at AW.org represent a large percentage of vintage appliance collectors, maybe we should come up with some sort of chart to determine the values of vintage appliances. This is still quite a new collectors market and we are the ones shaping it. Just something to think about.

Trainguy-Rich, so right about starting the bidding at a realistic level.

The higher the starting price, the more one is telling the buying public how irrational they are. Who wants to deal with that.

Those pink GE W & D, and DW and Stove & Oven, started, I think for like $29 each. The auctineer has planned there November thru December vacation in the Bahamas, I've heard.

I mean it's fun when teenagers list Westinghouse dryers on the back of their pickup truck for $9000, we get to make fun of them here as is required... but it doesn't move the merchandise. sadly.

There are still plenty of turquoise kitchen apps in older ranches, nationwide, that could be had for pocket change if one doesn't need them _right now_. GE seems to be the most prevalent, with the separate cooktop and wall oven, and how many of the wall-mount fridges have we seen in the last year? They're out there and some folks just want them out of their kitchen. Now the clothes and dish washers are another ball game seeing as they had more moving parts and tended to wear out. Supply/Demand in that case.

I did call him back and say it was just too much with the
shipping/driving and not being able to see them first. The
kitchen appliances were actually my first interest so will
see what he does about listing them. If he lists two groups,
washer/dryer and kitchen, then maybe the price on the kitchen
will be more reasonable. Again, if one believes what a person
tells them, he said he had one person ready to offer him $2000
for the Maytags.

He said they had not been used for the last 10 years so maybe
it will still work out in one way.
