Here is another good easy recipe'
Grate fine- 1 large head of cabbage.."REMOVE CORE!"
1 large or two small onions
Mix in 1 4 oz jar pimentos.."I omit if I dont have them on hand"
Bring to a boil and pour over the above..
1 1/4 cups sugar
3/4 cup white vinegar
1 tsp mustard seed
3/4 cup salad oil.
Mix well, cover and refrigerate, will keep up to three weeks in refrigerator..."I have kept it over a month, it is almost like a pickle"
CAUTION! Always remove the core from cabbage, if you dont it will get bitter and strong in a few days, if you have ever eaten slaw that had a strong almost horseradish taste, that is what was wrong, its the little things that the old folks did that make a big difference!!

Hans, you let the secret to great slaw out.. boiling the liquid

My recipe is somewhat similar although instead of mustard seed I use celery seed and a pinch of mustard powder. I put some mayo in as well once the mixtures cooled down somewhat though that's a preference but not necessity. It usually doesn't last too long around here because I'm always back at the fridge taking some out for a snack.

Cold Shoulder

Hans, this recipe freezes perfectly and can also be made with sliced cucumber and onion like Bread and Butter Pickles. I almost like them better after coming out of the freezer. The 4C does a nice job with the pelican.

Hans,

This is a great recipe! Cabbage season is in full bloom here in Michigan, and you should see how giant the cabbages are at the farmers market - and they are only a dollar each! This gives me another reason to stock up!

I will probably put in a little celery seed because I just love the flavor it adds, but I'm gonna make this one. Us Polish folks love our cabbage ;-)

I sometimes add a bit of red cabbage and/or some shredded carrot as well.. Too much red cabbage though and it turns incredibly pink. Earlier in the summer I dug out my Sears Hostess center with all the slicing/shredding cones but it didn't fare to well in that department and wasn't as fun as I'd been hoping . I think it's a bit too small so I've been using the shredding disk and food slicer attachment on the Bosch mixer. Maybe next time I'll drag up the vintage GE processor/blender and see how that one performs since I've never used it.
