AQUARIUS vs AQUARIUS ULTRA ....

the Ultras had Silk Printed acetates programme over the standard Aquarius, but more visually obvious were the styling differences.
Whilst the Aquarius versions looked more or less the same as previous models, the Ultra's boasted a sloping front edge to the lid, which was trimmed around all edges (no more broken lid strips).

The dial finger grip had a wave in the moulding, rather than the straight edge of old and the fascia plastic was shiny smooth, rather than the mottled finish. The years have proved the Ultra finish to be a lot less prone to brittle plastic syndrome and I don't think I have ever seen one with a damaged fascia.

The door was restyled, with the Ultra's having a door release button instead of a door mounted manual handle.

9531 ELECTRONIC 1000 SUPER

April 1986 and here is Currys exclusive model, with a crossover fascia - next generation styling, but with the horizontal new gen variable spin slide.

I had one of these in my 2nd year at university, but mine had the later front panel on it, with the inset door and later door release handle.

9533 ELECTRONIC 1000 SUPER

April 1988 saw the 9533 replace the 9532 in Currys showrooms ...

9534 ELECTRONIC 1000 PLUS

whilst April 88 saw the 9534 replace the 9530 as the core range machine. As well as Almond and White, this model was also available in Polar White ...

and May 1990 saw the arrival of the 9535.

Changes higher up the range saw the 953X machines now called DE LUXE, rather than PLUS ...

June 1991 sees the original! 9536 appear, with drum capacity increased to 5kg, up from 4.1kg ...

September '93 sees the 9538 AQUARIUS model introduced, as the basic range 953X model ....

With the 9538 as the AQUARIUS model, September 1993 also saw the 9539 introduced as the AQUARIUS ULTRA model.
Comparing the 9539 with the 9538, the styling differences become obvious. Quite a successful styling refresh ...

the 9536 wasn't dead however!

Some may have noticed that in the 9536 sentence I used the word 'original' to describe the June 1991 9536.
This is because August 1995 saw a model introduced bearing the same model number!

Quite what the point of this model was is not altogether clear, as it was identical to the 2nd version WM21, which would be introduced the following month. Trial run to market test the new WM 2nd version features maybe i.e the on/off button, rather than pull on/push off dial?

Hi Neil.

James Rankin managed to acquire a 9510 a couple of years ago. The original 1986 range of dial controlled, front loader, Next Generations are lucky to have a representative of each preserved - 9510/20/30 and 40. Good going!

9540 Electronic 1000 De Luxe

Back to April 1986 and we have the variable model 9540 introduced. Whilst Polar White wasn't introduced on the 953X models until the 9534 came along, the 9540 was available in the three colour schemes ....

Hotpoint 9540

Hi Paul,

Great thread as always.

The spin slider machines have always been my favourite Hotpoints - I have a pristine example of the 9540, albeit with the mottled door rather than the glossy door (unfortunately the seller had damaged it whilst moving it to his garage ready for me to collect, so close but so far). Also have the matching 9530 dryer so it's a true "De Luxe" example of an 80s Hotpoint set.

I've attached some pictures from my phone below - I also have some proper pictures on my camera memory card, but god knows where that is!

Next generations

Hi Paul!

How can I ever thank you for creating this thread, some very nice pictures of these stunning machines.

The 9517, I was brought up around this machine as my Nanny & Grandad (Grandad who passed away in 2012) had one, it was brought from the Arding & Hobbs in Clapham Junction in South London, but it served many years before being replaced by our WM51 First Edition.

Didn't realise the 9512 actually had green font on the fascia

Our Hotpoint 9530

Hi Paul (and all)

Great and very interesting thread. Certainly filled in a few 'blanks' of info for me.

I was sorting out some old photos today and came across this one from mid-1987, which is the Hotpoint 9530 Electronic 1000 Plus in almond, in our kitchen, that I grew up with from about age 11 onwards.

This 9530 was bought from Rumbelows in Horsham, and replaced our Electra GL2. Although I have fond memories of the 9530 (the famous Hotpoint motor noise!), it was pretty unreliable, in particular the water level pressure tube which often got blocked, causing the machine to keep filling and water to pour out the dispenser, also brushes and bearing failure. It did however last for 10 years, and could have been repaired (bearings again!) but mum had had enough and bought a Siemens machine.

Looking at the pic, I think this would have been on program 4 (50degree synthetics) which my mum used to use most of the time. It had advanced to 6 (40degree synthetics), and then was doing the cool-down before rinse 1 judging from the water level.

Love the kitchen decor too(!), and the big pack of Persil - with the 'Kids eat free' promotion for Little Chef on it.
