Scratch Towels
We used to call them "scratch towels" when they came from the line after Mom washed them in our 1957 RCA Whirlpool Imperial in hot water. We were embarassed by them, a lot of ladies were using automatic dryers then, not clotheslines in the 60's. My mother "had a dryer too, a nice big one, but we were forbidden to use it unless there was a week of rain in the forecast. Sure, anyone knows a sheet or towel smells better line dried in the sun than baked in a Maytag. Miss Kiss My Hind Cheeks could always tell a sheet or towel that had been dried indoors or outdoors and 100 feet from the house so it would catch the south breeze, even in the winter. By the time February came, your hands would crack and bleed from the cold like an old wet rusty clothespin, while she would stand at the window and tell you 'Five pins on the sheets, Delores, not 4, you know how I like them." My favorite part of Delores Claiborne was the laundy that Vera(Kiss my Rear Cheeks) Donovan made Delores endure. Some people have to have line dried laundry.
