I somehow don't mind the ads... And maybe I someday might consider upgrading my membership; just need to get caught up on my other bills...

Personally I don't pay not to see the ads, I don't think seeing them would bother me anyhow. I pay a pittance because its a great site and I wish to do my part to help support it.
Also there are 2 additional forums that paid members get access to.

Yes, I have Adblock. Upgraded membership comes with many other features. For example, I like the ability to edit my posts, to send and receive private messages, to sort threads by latest posts, to see clearly whether a thread has posts I haven't seen, to access the 2 private forums, etc.
To me, the above features justify an upgraded membership ($1/month) even without the added virtue of supporting this site. Here's the complete list of what upgraded membership buys you:

Block the ads is only a small detail.
I'd pay for the membership but my credit card isn't international. I regret canceling my international credit card believing i'd never need it, so, it was pointless to pay more for something I won't use.
Robert spends a lot of money and time on the website and we use this space for fun and for learning, so it's very fair if we help him.
And also, with an upgraded membership, we have access to two other forums.
It's very cheap so, I wish we all could pay.
By the way, Robert, can you think of any way I can pay, considering I don't have an international credit card? If you have any idea, please let me know and I'll be glad to upgrade my membership ASAP.

Advertisments Are Not The Question
Many of us long time members often asked if there was something we could do to help defer costs associated with running this site. This included sending donations by any means welcomed. Thus we are quite happy to make financial contributions regardless of adverts, or not.
I must say it is rather bold to make one's first query upon finding a group to begin questioning how it tis run. What exactly is your game?

I am a member to support this very special and unique site. If there is ever evidence of something that is a 'labor of love' this site is it. If it were ever shut down for some inconceivable reason, this would leave a gaping hole in my internet interests. That is why we must declare Robert an international treasure and wrap him up in cotton wool, so nothing untoward can ever happen to him.

It's a valid question for someone who is new here. Removing the ads is not the reason most of us join the pay side of the site as many have said. Those of us that have been here for years look at the site as a close group of friends and we support Robert in maintaining the site. It is not cheap - plus there is so much valuable info here it's worth more than the $12 yearly donation.
I suggest the OP stick around for a while on the free side and see if it fits his needs.

I think it's the attitude reflected in the thread's title that seems disrespectful to some of us.
The perks of upgraded membership go far beyond elimination of advertising. Perhaps if the busy OP had slowed down and looked into it, he wouldn't have had to create this thread in the first place.

Ad blocking is fine and dandy, but running, writing code and maintaining servers is time consuming and problematic if bandwidth goes over the allotted overage. Think of how many times your cell phone goes over your data rate? You get charged for overage right? Same thing here......
We all benefit from great information that other website fails to give when we choose too fix than replace. And the rich history of brands of appliances history will direct you here faster than MFG websites.
It's more than your average website!
