Glad to hear you're home safe David!

VCCC Convention 2006

Wow--What A Convention! This was my first convention attended, and I must say I had a Ball! The cleaning competition was both interesting and challenging, the tour of the Fox Theatre with Stan Kann, and getting to use the Mighty Spencer Vacuum Cleaner was great! I'm looking forward to next year!

Wow these pictures are great fun, thanks everyone for posting them <br
Next year when the VCCC convention is in Omaha I will try to make it down to see some of the festivities, it sure does look like fun <br
Now here is a question that I have wondered about for quite a while. Can on of you vac boys explain to me why this particular model of Electrolux is always missing a piece from the front door? You can see right through to the front of the bag, was this they way they were made or was it converted at some point? I have found at least five of these vacs at the estate sales and everyone one has been like this?

Fred, I love the format that you are using to post these pictures!! What type is it? Thanks so much for sharing. Hard to believe that just a week ago we were there!! Terry

Electrolux

Robert,
Thats the model LX, and the "hole" is basically a visual check for presence of the dust bag. That was Lux's first paper bag machine and featured their (in)famous bag ejector, a mechanism inside that when the airflow drops to a certain point the front pops open, and it *ejects* the bag. I don't think its possible to close the machine properly without a bag in place.
These are fun to play with, and if you get a machine with the ejector spring wound a bit too tight it will launch the bag across the room
Hope I explained that right..
I know you'd have a blast at the convention!

Thanks Jeff, so it was designed that way! I always thought it looked like something was missing. Ohh and I will have to experiment with the Eject-o-bag. I wonder what would happen if I added a stronger spring? Must stop--don't get me started, I'll end up on "Pimp My Vacuum" <br
Maybe I was dreaming, but wasn't there another model that looked very similar to this but had a yellow and red logo on the side?

LX

The chrome/yellow/red machines are earlier, plain chrome ones were from later in the run. <br
Definately pimp it Robert and see what you get...I have one that will launch the bag across the room <br
One thing I forgot to mention is that bag door, the hose coupler is hinged, so when the machine pops open the cover will lay flat, so the bag can *eject* with nothing in its way!

1954 lux

I bought one of these a couple of months ago. My mom had purchased a new one back then, you bought them from a salesperson that came to the house, like Kirby. She got the accessories such as the floor polisher, paint sprayer, mothball holder. I think it cost about $300.00 at the time. I called it the "tonna-cleaner" because they weigh a lot. <br
When my folks passed away a lot of stuff was given away or sold, and the electrolux was one of them. I have been wanting one for a while, and just like so many other collectibles that I have been thinking about, one appeared at an estate sale, in nice condition, although with the wrong hose and no accessories. It should have the woven hose, but it has a more recent hose with the external spiral <br
So I got it and use it as my daily (or weekly) hard surface floor cleaner. The bags are available at my local hardware store (Emigh Hardware, an Ace Hardware dealer) the package says "Tank cleaner" an apt description. I enjoy using the lux, it really has great suction, and the cord winder works great too. Ejector mechanism is not working, which I gather is pretty normal. My mom's did work for many years, and then failed and would eject with a partially filled bag, my dad disabled it <br
I have a Kirby also, for the carpeted areas. <br
What a great club, I love seeing what you guys have collected! <br
Martin

Thanks guys, I would love to find a chrome/yellow/red logo machine sometime, I have never seen one <br
Of course I'm partial to Electrolux because my grandmother who had the '58 Frigidaire Pulsamatic washer, had a post-war XXX or model 30 Electrolux which I use to love to help her wash and vacuum her house (imagine that LOL), when I was little.

Thanks for the picutres

They are great! Which vacuum won the contest? Is there a bracket for suction only? brushroll/beater bar? You guys must have had a great time. I saw a Dyson in the background? How did it do? I know that a vintage cleaner must have outcleaned it. My favorite vac was the Celebrity Guardsman. I'll bet that will clean anything. (Of course I'm a Hoover fan too.) I like that Lux 60 also. How many vacuums were there and what was the best in the terms of cleaning?
Tim

The LX....

I have my grandma's LX she bought new in the early 50's. My mom has said she spent many hours using that machine. Grandma even managed to save the box. She had stored old clothing in it and I had to get it when I got the machine. Its got the yellow sides and its original hose <br

many winners

Tim there were many winners!
The ones I remember are <br
Reggie with his Rexaire model B - Suction onl
Corey's Hoover model 64 - post war-1965 Beater ba
Terry Latz/Fred Nelson - Filter Queen model 31 revolving brus
Marty Rocha - Singer Golden Powermaster - 1966-80 beater ba <br
The MONSTER VAC contest was a 4 way tie between 2 Hoover Innovations, my Hoover Conquest, and a brand new Kenmore Progressive bagless canister.

Thanks

I'm surprised the Rexair beat the Lux. I always thought those old model Bs were poor in suction.
Tim <br
PS Did anyone brin an Oreck or a Kirby?

I'm surprised the Rexair beat the Lux

seems to me, with str8-suction cleaning, the design of the nozzle and the users technique are AS important at the machines suction. there were MANY kirbys. i wish someone had brought a Oreck xl21. i dont think a saw a single Oreck while i was there. most vacuum gurus seem to agree that the Oreck is a glorified electric broom. you pay for 90 percent advertising, 10 percent product.

i wish someone had brought a Oreck xl21. i dont think a saw

yep that kinda sums it up...I've had a couple of Orecks come and go, but to me its not a real vacuum. <br
Just my opinion of course...

The reason for the Electrolux model 60 (LX) front cover cut-out is very simple. The machine cannot be used (will have no suction) without a bag in place <br
The cleaning contest was very interesting this year. The amount of sand in the mixture was reduced, with the amount of talc increased. This was done so that the dirt mixture would 'clog' the bag of the cleaners being tested. The cleaners with the best ability to cope with clogging dust, would win <br
RJ's tank Electro-Hygiene canister with Air-Way - built Power Nozzle was most interesting to watch. You could hear the motor bog down as the bag clogged out on the first and second strokes. His machine, while a good cleaner, left so much dirt in the carpet, it was hard to imagine it had picked up anything at all <br
The Dyson-copy (the Kenmore Progressive "iradium" canister) did an extremely good job of carpet cleaning, as did the two Hoover Conquests, one of the Hoover Aggrevations (oops, Innovation), and the Dyson Telescope DC-11 canister with Turbine Head. What was interesting was that the Central Vacs, while doing a good job of carpet cleaning, did NOT clean the rug as well as a number of machine. That was completely contrary to what I thought would happen <br
The Rexair model B did a very commendable job of rug cleaning, since the filtration system did NOT clog with the talc (although quite a bit did come through the water, into the motor's fans), allowing the machine to remove a tremendous amount, even with the rather wimpy rug nozzle and the fact that Reggie is tall (the Rexair rug tool was designed to be held low, and Reggie held it very high). <br
I was personnaly impressed with Corey's Simplicity Synergy. It did get the dirt out of the rug, even though the bag clogged out with the dust and the machine refused to turn the turbo brush after ingesting the test dirt mixture. The rug was very clean and the machine is a pleasure to use <br
Next year, for the Monster Vac category, I'm going to hook a Bison upright to an old Chrome Dome Rainbow. Perhaps we'll call the result a Water Buffalo <br
Marty K's Hoover 150 with the paper bag (type W) conversion kit was a joy to see. Very rare, especially with the factory original paper bag kit and the complete attachment set. We'll probably never see one again <br
For me, the Kenmore with Power Nozzle from 1959 (I believe it was a Satellite model) that Fred Nelson brought was the highlight of the show. A very rare electric hose with straight end (instead of a curved hose end) and the original power nozzle were just a delight to see and operate.

The Synergy...

Clogged after Tom rubbed about (literally) 3 pounds of that deadly mixture into the rug. He then vacuumed it all up with the Synergy until it looked clean. He then went over it with the Dyson, to show much the Simplicity had left behind. The Dyson didn't get anything. <br
Man that bag was heavy <br
Then Kenmore bagless canister really impessed me too. Good bagless technology mixes well with a legitimately good brushroll. Real agitation is what a Dyson needs <br
Corey

welcome *superba*, i was sorry i didnt go to see your collection during the convention. maybe you can post a link to some photos of your collection for us? David

Welcome Superba

You know I love that theme. You will like it here. As you can see the conversation is interesting and it is a very friendly place. Amazing how much vac conversation goes on. Hopefully, when the VCCC makes some changes to its Web site the same thing will happen there.

Welcome Superba!!

Hey Tom, Good to see you here! I too was very sorry to miss you collection this year! Oy! What a week! Hope to see you next year!!! Marty

Hello Superba

Welcome and I hope you have as much fun on this site as I do. I love the pictures and the ebay postings. <br

Back to reality

Well, hard to believe the convention is now over a week ago! The time sure does fly--no pun intended. <br
Here is my crew, (Gigi, Charlie, Eli & Bob, L to R), for my first trip back and believe me, they heard all about the convention. Thankfully they are all friends and indulge me <br
Bob, (far right), came over to my house yesterday after we got back and watched me unpack the Kirby Classic III and reassemable it. He is a Kirby fan from his youth but not ready to start collecting.
