Well the Jig is up I guess! I'm the one who bought the Pink Westinghouse Spacemate set off of ebay last week. I had tried to buy them previously from the owner on Craigslist with little avail so when I saw them online and knowing I had the security of ebay I purchased them and went and got them yesterday. A few on here commented how silly it was to purchase something in "unknown" condition but I felt the gamble was worth it so I slapped my money down and took a chance and I am very glad I did. THEY ARE FLAWLESS except for being slightly dirty from sitting in a basement for fifty years. The original owner bought them and had them installed in a closet she had converted because she didn't want to go down to the basement to do her laundry anymore. However, I guess she decided these were too small for her liking because only a few month after purchasing them she had them taken out and stored in the basement and kept using her other set (this is what I was told by the new owner of the house who talked to the original owner when he bought the house). They are like new and both have all the original paperwork and manuals. I'm going to do some maintenance to them this weekend to see about getting things oiled and checked over before I attempt to fire them up from there half century of sleep. Some quick photos are attached for you viewing pleasure and I will make some videos after I get them both running.

My wonderful Aunt Nat had this exact set (in white) and washed for 7 children, herself and Uncle Mel. My grandmother (we called her Mado instead of Nanna or Granny), would go over to help because my uncle was a cop and my aunt was a records clerk in a major medical center.Mado would take us there to play with our cousins and their neighbors kids and I'd always get to watch her do my aunt's laundry using these twins. One day, I noticed a sugar bowl in the dryer. I took it out and turned the dryer on to have the blower get the residue out. As soon as it came on, sparks flew through the drum and scared the s@#t out of me.The same day, I saw no water in the washer but the drum was turning. I opened it up and the water went everywhere. It had filled all the way up the window with water. Needless to say, Aunt Nat was super p/o'd because their basement floor was that old floor tile over concrete and flat as a pancake so the water went everywhere. The laundry room, den, bathroom, and kitchen.I recently spoke to her (she's now 82) and we spoke about all the bratty things I did when we were little.I sent her a picture of Lucille Ball in her stacked laundromat Spacemate twins from a promo they (Lucy, Desi,Vivian and William) did for the "Studio One" shows Westinghouse wanted to sponsor.Aunt Nat just chuckled at it and said she was surprised it wasn't me in the picture instead of Lucy.[this post was last edited: 10/12/2011-22:22]

Were these sold in many countries? My sister sent me an ad from 1963 for a similar washer from Brazil which suggests these washers were also sold in other countries!
