Re:#33
Amana claims in this advertisement that there is only one refrigerator and freezer and it’s made by Amana. I beg to differ.
In 1956 my Dad who was an attorney bartered with one of his clients who owned a furniture/appliance store to handle his divorce in exchange for a brand new Manitowoc refrigerator freezer with the freezer on the bottom. Both the refrigerator and the freezer were equal in size like the Amana in the ad. It was massive in comparison to the little Servel that it replaced. I remember the evening that it was delivered because “Peter Pan” with Mary Martin was being televised for the first time that evening while the massive Manitowoc was being delivered. I wish that I had a photo of it.
It was really a big deal when we got that Manitowoc refrigerator/freezer. We were able to have popsicles and ice cream on hand all the time after that and we always had plenty of ice cubes because there was a shelf the full width of the freezer that held several ice cube trays.
Mom used to make Baked Alaska for Sunday dinners because she had the room to keep the cake and ice cream solidly frozen until the last minute when she would take it out of the freezer, cover it with meringue and pop it into a blazing hot oven to brown the meringue just before bringing it out to the table to the ow’s an awe’s of everybody at the table and it always looked just like the picture in the Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook.
