Vintage Hoover Electric Washing Machine Model 0319

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I've seen one of those dumped down the back of an old shed at my grandmothers. I'd say it was replaced in the early 1970s.

It should be geared up for running on 220-240V 50Hz, so you might have trouble using it in the USA without serious modification.

I've never quite understood why we didn't really adopt some version of the US-style automatics that were available in the first half of the 1900s. Although, we were a bit broke after WWII and, if I read correctly, early european automatics and small cars were around the same kind of price!

By the 70s the FL automatic ruled supreme and everything else disappeared.

This Hoover machine was very popular in Australia in the late 40's and early 50's. It was known as the "Hoover Junior". This machine actually became one half of the Hoover Twin tub as technology slowly advanced. Great memories.

If my Scottish relatives are to be believed - and we are talking about folks who still in great stretches know tremendous poverty yet manage generous hearts (the miserly stereotype is false and untrue and the fact that my birthday is coming up has nothing whatsoever to do with my saying this) then one reason for this was the simple fact that large stretches of the UK were poor, poor, poor. Between a hideously ruinous War (WWI) against Germany and a horrid war against Nazi Germany and Japan a few years later lay a period of economic depression which was truly existence threatening.
Just the answer I got when I asked a simliar question; your mileage may vary.

As a matter of fact....

Hey ppl

Hoovers washing machine factory in Merthyr Tydfill(Wales!!) started production in 48(this one is late 50s/early 60s. Up until the late 60s when the US factory started producing washers 75% of the output went for export and so this is probably a 110v example!- sounds like it has a seized motor or faulty start capacitor tho :(

or,

a broken/missing belt.

I have seen pictures of this machine before, and it's interesting. 32.00 is about 29.00 more than I'd be willing to spend on this particular example, however.

I have the USA version of this machine. If any of you Hoover collectors would like this little guy from 1953, just let me know.
