I remember a lady up the street that lived in a circa 1800's house doing her laundry in a portable Hoover washer that she would roll up to the kitchem sink like a portable dishwasher. She bought it from Sears in the late 60's. Then she replaced it with a new one in the early 70's. That one was harvest gold with a wood grain cover. She would do her their small stuff in the Hoover and send the largr bath towels, sheets, etc to the cleaners. I wish I had asked her why she had to replace the first Hoover so soon. She didn't throw anything away. That first Hoover after it broke down went in a shed on the back of her garage with every other appliance she had ever owned. An appliance collector's dream come true, but murder for anyone elase that had to clean it out!

Hoover twin tub washers

It probably wasn't anything major that went wrong with it - those were amazingly simple machines. I still have my '60s model that I bought 2nd-hand in 1978, and really the only thing that ever needed attention was the pump (they were rather notorious for leaking) and perhaps the replacement of a belt once in a while.

That's it! That's the first one she had. It had a cover that was covered in light grey Formica with a metal band around the edge. The 1970's one was harvest gold and had a fake wood grain top with harvest gold edge around it. I always liked the first one better. But can tell me this: Did Hoover make their own washing machines? I look on Ebay a lot a old vintage stuff and Hoover even put out a steam iron for a while.

Hoover

Hoover built their own goods, most for the US were built in North Canton OH, most for Europe were built in Wales.

Here's a picturee of mine, works well after 35 years.

AW Member MACBOI is a pro on Hoovers, and if you search here for "twin tub,", you'll get lots of info.

akronman: Love that old vintage gas stove in your profile photo. I know that the main oven on the left, but what it that smaller door to the left: A second oven or warming compartment? I gonna make a guess that since houses didn't have central heat then that it is a warming compartment. Am I right? Is that your stove?

The Hoover 0510 is the model she had, and here is a pic of the machine with the original Formica top.

Hey Retromania

That stove is a late 40's model, they used the same overall style from early 30's thru the early 60's. Chambers Range from Shelbyville Indiana. The smaller door on the right is actually just storage. The oven is so very well insulated that it doesn't warm the side at all. Plenty of pots and pans storage. Central heat was very prevalent by the time this stove was built, so one of its selling points was that it was so well insulated it did NOT overheat the kitchen.
