Hi, I'm new here on this forum so cut me some slack! Thanks lol. But I am a collector of classic/vintage window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, and fans. So I guess I'll post up some pics of my stuff (I have too many fans). Ps. I know for a fact that I have a friend on here, I believe his name is rstacey1990. He's a collector of window a/c's as well

welcome

you'll fit right in here :)I have quite a few vintage ACs as well, mostly 1970s and '80s era,my oldest one a big GE from 1958-it's in pretty rough cosmetic condition, but still runs and cools really nice-4 pole compressor(1725 RPM).Plenty of fans too:early 1900s"brass"to mid 1980s galaxy, lasco,ETC with the bronze colored clear blades.

Re vintage ACs

Im not convinced that the new window units are any cheaper to run.....Now before some of you call me crazy......The old units blow out air that is MUCH MUCH colder, hence , like old dishwashers, they have much shorter run times, at least the compressors run much less, the newer AC's run those little weak compressors on and on, yes, they draw much less power, but its made up for when they run 4 or 5 times as long as something made in the 50s.......That Fedders is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

Hans, some of the older ones are just as efficient as newer ones, just a bit heavier to carry... Many aren't very efficient but I enjoy all of mine anyway!

But not much at this time of the year here!

Here are mine:

Nice to you here as well Phil, thnx I'll have more pics of the it after I finish putting the last touches on it. It's what 52 years old and had just a little amount of rust in it!!!! On the side, anyone else got pics of their units?

I have a few Vintage Units too

Hi Emerson5000, I also have a few older window A/C units that I don't want to just toss out. We have central ac and I keep the older units as a spare just in case the central unit dies, which at times has. I have 2 Westinghouse unites from the the late 60's and a few GE/Hotpoint carry cools which we take when we go to Maine. I have one Emerson Quiet Kool from the mid 70's which works well. Should take pictures of them, this way I have them for keepers.

Here are mine. These are becoming more and more rare in this area. #1 is a 60's model GE used in my workshop on hot summer days. #2 is cir.1957 Coldspot, not currently in use but works perfectly. #3 is Catalina "Big Tex" 25,000 btu that my son uses in his workshop. Catalina was a store brand made by Borg Warner (Norge, York)

Cool Old Window A/Cs

We have a 1/2 dozen or so really neat old window A/Cs around the warehouse-museum, two of my favorites are the Whirlpool built Coldspots that have a 2nd condenser behind the evaporator so they can dehumidify without cooling, these models have both a thromostat and a humidstat so you can set the ideal temperature and humidity level. They have a reversing type valve so they sound like a heat-pump as they switch from cooling to dehumidifying only.

Hi Sam, that 1957 Coldspot is really neat, we had a 1956 10,000 BTU 12 amp 120 volt CP that was nearly identical to yours that worked great for years. These were made before Sears switched over to WP to build their window A/Cs, I believe these were made by Seeger Refrigeration.

I look forward to seeing more old Window A/C units and hearing about their operation.

Wow I'm so happy to know that there is a ton of people that are into vintage a/c's!!! I plan on getting: 2 1957 fridigaires, 2 philco ford huskies, a carrier, 1948-1955 carrier and a airtemp.

I've been on the hunt for a vintage A/C unit for at least a year now, and it seems they are super rare around here. I need a 5000 btu (or less, I know some are less) for my bedroom because it never cools properly with the central air, and I sleep best when it's COLD. I'm on about 4 years with a cheap modern unit but it has it's share of squeaks and rattles, and as of this fall, it really wasn't cooling all that great. It has been totally cleaned every season, never run with a dirty filter etc, but seems like it's had it's day. I had a couple older ones (probably 70's-80's vintage) before we moved 4 years ago, but gave them away because I didn't think we would need them in a house with central air. Wrong. I did pick up a really neat old Whirlpool Dehumidifier a couple summers ago, truly little old lady owned, I got it at an estate sale for cheap because the fan had seized and it wouldn't collect water anymore. A few minutes with some 3 in 1 motor oil and some twisting and turning and it runs like new... After a thorough cleaning it has purred along the last two summers, oh so quietly. Does a great job (actually I think better than our modern 30 pint unit, and the Whirlpool is only 14 pint...) I think I looked it up and it was built in 68. No full pan shutoff, and the humidistat is dead, but it works great!

Well Dustin92 I would hunt for garge sales, garbage, dumpster (if your down with that), even a CL add wanting ac units. I usually keep a eye out and get lucky. That's how I found mine. I love doing a full resto on the ones I get. It's involving but totally worth since it's saving a unit from a rusty death.
