My only experience with ACs

 

 

Oh Dear.  Happens to me all the time.

 

I'm wondering what model Pink had all the problems with. Carrier perhaps?

I've been really busy

So cleaned a unit, finished up a unit. Now I'm ready for more restos.

Starting to get hot outside...

Time to put the fedders back together and put the EQK back in its window. I got that EQK end if last summer when it was 90 degress strait for 2 weeks and it never missed a beat. Blew out 65 degree. I was really impressed on know well it did for being in strait sun too.

Well. I was having a good day

Got the fedders with the weather wheel finished today. It has to weight in atleast 100 pounds. I carried it up two sets of stairs and open the door, turn the light on only to find a bat, YES A BAT. Flying around my room. So now I got a new problem on my hands... Any one know how to get them gone

Our elderly next door neighbor used to always get bats in her back bedroom, and she was terrified of them. My Dad would always go over with a fishing net and catch it, then let it go outside. Not sure how to keep them from coming in, we've never had a problem with them in any house we've had.

Bats are a pain to get rid of. You have to look outside to find where they are coming in. It can be a small crack or hole in your siding. A little hint in locating their entrance is to look closely depending how high you house is with binoculars and look for a small gap or entrance and there will be some staining on the boards where they go in. I guess they relieve themselves either going in or coming out. Need to seal up all holes.

Bats have a cartilaginous skeleton, and can
squeeze through the smallest openings, even
against pressure. I had one in a place I
rented a few years back. The landlord came
to take care of it. I was told if you throw
a glove up in the air, while it's flying
around, it will latch onto it and fall to the
ground. Then you can throw a towel over it,
and take it outside. I never had to do it,
so would be interesting, to know if that works.

Back to A/C's. On Saturday, I picked up the
Welbilt Casement unit that was for sale in
Manhattan.

I haven't gotten into yet. But I will

Phil and Ken,

The units you guys are restoring look fantastic. It's nice to see someone trying to save these machines. I love these old air conditioners. I don't believe the stories the government try to push off on us. These new machines that run all the time, don't last and end up in a landfill all to soon are not eco friendly. They only take into account how much energy they are using while running and not all the other factors that go into the mix. It's biased to convince us that newer is better and I don't buy it.

Pics of the welbilt?

Is it a mighty mite casement unit? Sound like a nice unit, I don't know of any welbilts around my area, hell my place is the only on in Oakmont that truely uses vintage window ac's. Fedders is ready for summer time use! And NO MORE BATS (so far). I left the windows open all day, came home and he was gone.

Re Bats...CAUTION!

If you are bitten by a bat, or get scratched by a bat  PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR RIGHT THEN!!!! You must take rabies shots, Bats DO carry rabies and rabies is a 100 percent fatal disease, and a HORRIBLE way to die!

Years ago, would pick up window units people threw out.  Often, there was nothing wrong with them, but they hadn't been maintained.  

 

So, I would remove the cover and sure enough, the insides would be filled with leaves and lint.  Get out the hose and carefully clean the coils and the bottom.  Then clean the housing, and if necessary, oil the fan motor.  

 

Those older A/Cs were built to last.... if you did the maintenance.  And most people aren't willing to take a 10K window AC out because its too heavy.'

As for bats-  We need them.  They are good creatures to have if you have bugs like mosquitos.  No, we don't want them IN our homes, but ON the outside is definitely desirable.  They are our friends.

 

 

The best thing is to put up a Bat House on the side of ones home, in addition to making sure any cracks are sealed.  But make sure, when sealing cracks that you're not sealing bats INSIDE.  Best to get a professions help.  

With a nice healthy bat house, you're nearly quaranteed to get rid of all flying bugs in your yard.  Like a cat, we need bats to help control naturally, pest insects.

I got lucky and did not get bit or scratched by the bat. If I put a bat house up will they for sure stay out of the house? It's gone for sure out if my room besides pissing on my bed (yes the covers were thrown into the wash).

Not to scare you but, bats once left in a room will fly around for awhile. Their sonar gets tired after being in a confined space. They will find a place to rest and hold up for awhile. This maybe behind a picture on the wall, inside pleats of draperies, inside an open light fixture behind a bureau etc. We had a summer house on a lake and had so many bats in the house if someone left the door open for any length of time. There were at least 2 badminton rackets or tennis rackets in each room along with towels. We learned that instead of trying to hit them just hold the racket up in the air they would land on it cover with a towel and release it outside. Hopefully in your case it found the exit and went out the window. Seems like yesterday was almost a/c weather here at 78 degrees in the afternoon. Did uncover both central units outside.

Yes. The Welbilt is a "Mighty Mite". I'm hoping
to open it up and check it out this weekend. I'm
still settling into the house, so I'm trying to
balance out my time with these fun projects,
otherwise the house will never get done / LOL.

Got another unit coming my way

First off let me clear this up- so far I have not seem high or low of the bat. I'm to get a 1960 emerson quite kool easy mount. It'll need a full resto but that's nothing I can't handle. Think I should fix it up and use it for the summer of the fedders? The fedders did a really good job when it was 90+ out and kept my room at 62 on low fan.

Contacting a bat mitigation service in PA would be a good idea.  Now is probably the best time of year to seal the structure, before they become more active.

I wonder how many bats have found there way in when someone puts an AC unit in the window, but doesn't seal all around the edges.

 

I stayed at an old hotel recently, with a window AC unit.  It was installed in a "double hung" window, but there was no foam or anything sealing the upper gap between top of bottom sash, and the glass.  This is prime area for a bat looking for a tight space to roost.  They would squeeze in just above the AC unit, crawl between the glass, and come out on top and into the room.
