To Unimatic1140,I have an idea of creating a site similar to AW.org but involving cinema & non-cinema projectors. Don't misunderstand me,no intention of ripping you off or any other trouble. I'm curious about what software or service you're using involved with the AW.org site, graphics, etc. Because I'm into theatre sound & projection equipment, & have such equipment at my home,I want to start a site on cinema sound & projection equipment ranging from vintage/antique to present/modern (as with AW.org)(which you probably seen such equipment online) I want to call it Cinema Projector.org & if you approve, the slogan being "Does Your Projector Say It's A Cinema Projector?"

There is already such a site on projectors and cinema type issues-Film-Tech.I have an interest in such things-but don't work in a theater.I have a small projector collection-one of them is a Holmes 35MM "D" portable projector.and I have several 16MM "classroom" portable projectors,Bell&Howell,Kodak. With cinemas converting to digital "filmless" projectors-expect to see 35MM film machines becoming available-EBay,Craiglist,and junked. Some folks have obtained older cinema projectors to use at home-they replace the long focus lenses with short focus ones, and use a smaller lamp in the projector lamphouse.Another surprizing source for projectors is--TV stations.they may have ones sitting in their storerrooms at the studio or transmitter site.

I'm familiar with Film-Tech & was a member of those forums & until I my account was wrongfully banned. Don't misunderstand me but my mother belies they are too strict with their forum rules (I'm autistic,so pardon me for the way I'm writing this reply)

Hi there mathewhebailey0,

To answer your question, if you are asking what software I am using to run this site, everything you see here is completely custom designed and written by me. The only exception is a couple of minor java-script plug in's that I incorporated into my code.

All the graphics come from vintage magazines and washer manuals, etc. Nothing you see here is software that I purchased in any way. I wanted this site and Vacuumland and my soon to be opened new site completely custom, one of a kind places.

The website itself is run on a Apache Web server using a VPS service, we used to be on shared hosting service but the site traffic has now outgrown that.

Oh and I totally approve of "Does Your Projector Say It's A Cinema Projector?" It's a super cute idea. There is that old saying "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" so thank you :-)

I am also a member of various other forums, radios and tv's and phonographs. I also work with projection equipment, so I am a member of film-tech.

The issues I see with a site that specializes in commercial equipment, is that few people interact with that stuff. Film-Tech is largely a trade forum, not for the casual film buff. Most members are service techs and dealers. As digital cinema continues to replace film, film projection and the equipment will become rather useless. It's not like many people have a large library of 35mm films in their possession.

Other vintage appliances continue to be collected because you can continue to restore and use them. With film projectors, you'll have plenty of available equipment and nothing to run through them.

This is extremely sad, since I have been in this business for twenty years and don't want to throw them out. What can you do with something as large as a 35mm projector?

I have a few vintage projectors in my collection and would be interested in a forum for them. I need some parts for a few of them and a forum is a great place to meet people with similar likes and do a little parts swapping.

For large format projector users-once you have gotten a projector-35 or 70MM how to get material to play on it.I have a few boxes of film trailers-and a 35MM training film-but nothing else.Even 16MM films are hard to find. For theaters converting to digital-is a sad fate for some film equipment-goes to the scrapyard rather than to collectors.Yes,a cinema film projector is a large "appliance" to accomidate in a home but its done.some years back in Alexandria Va,visited the home of a deceased CBS executive engineer-he had a complete 35MM changeover theater in the homes basement-He built all of the equipment except the 2 Simplex 35MM projectors. The agency I was working for-was picking up a tape dubbing system from them.I suppose that man had access to fims to watch in his theater. The basement was large-and yes-there was a projection booth in it holding the projectors and their equipment-just like a regular theater-but a smaller scale. And at this point wonder how long theaters will be with us--there is so many ways to watch movies at home! I haven't been to a theater in over a year. And studios are phasing out film programs.I think for me may have to stay with "potable" type projectors-35MM "portables" start at 100Lbs on up.The DEVry models once assembled were as large and weighed as much as standard cinema projectors. At the Carmike theater I do go to on occasion-instead of the rows of film cans at the front of the theater-you now see small boxes containing the moives on hard drive packs.

Cinevent

In case you haven't heard of it, Cinevent is held every Memorial Day Weekend here in Columbus. They show old movies, hold an auction of movie posters, and have a large dealer area where pretty much anything related to movies is sold, bought or traded.

I've only ever visited the dealer area, but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing films in film cans for sale, and a few projectors, too.

The movies they show all weekend are mostly silent, but the dealers deal in everything, old to new.

The "Cinevent" sounds good-maybe they should make it a traveling event.I have a large collection of movie banners instead of posters-less expensive to buy.One sheet movie posters can cost a lot!The larger format banners are actually less expensive. And I have a large boxful of "video" posters-for VHS videos and DVDs these are less valuable than cinema-theater ones.got them from a video place that closed.
