Hi there,
I'm looking for GE or Hotpoint "Carry Cool" or "Porta Cool" window air-conditioners that are clean, and in good working order.

These were the units that were made from the mid 1970's through the mid 1980's and had a handle for carrying, and weighed roughly around 40-45 pounds.

If anybody has any for sale, please send pictures, and let me know what you have. I'm willing to pay shipping if it's not totally outragious.

Thanks everyone!

I just picked up this one last week, found on eBay. It looks like a 1979’s earlier model, single speed.

The guy shipped it to me from Pennsylvania, and wasn’t too costly. It blows colder air than my central unit does.

These are hard to find.

a member has one I have to get from him.....

but while on a scavenger hunt, found this, too clean to ever have been put into use, Hotpoint version....the house was going to be demolished, and figured what the hell...

Wayupnorth, sure! I’ll take it if you don’t want it. It might just need a recharge. Would you be willing to ship? Have you got pics?

Yogi, that’s a beautiful old Hotpoint!

There’s this Hotpoint near Louisville, but the woman has never contacted me back. The one in the link wrote me back stating that he will not ship it by any means. That’s the biggest problem, people won’t ship them. lol

Your thread reminded me of the one I got from my niece 2 years ago. Here's the link to the thread from when I got it if anyone would like to take a look.

the first one I got was a bigger unit, in size and BTU's...somewhere around 8 to 10 thousand...

the air flow seemed weak, it would cool down the room nicely, but took a long time...I ended up cutting slots in between the spliny fins, from then on, I got a very good airflow across the whole top area...

one extra advantage to these, is the output is from the top, helping the issue of most units from pulling in the cooled air before the room gets cold and triggering the thermostat...

Energy Hogs

GE Carry Cools are tremendous energy hogs by todays standards. I went back and looked at an old post on one of these. 7.5 amps for 4,000 BTUs. A current model GE window unit will give you 10,000 BTUs for the same 7.5 amps. If you want one for nostalgia or a collection, fine, just be aware of electrical usage.

Yeah, I’m mainly just wanting them for display and collecting purposes. I’ve considered on buying a new unit for backup in case my central unit quits.

But the Carry Cool would be just for collecting purposes. 🙂
