We are looking at replacing a washing machine belonging to an elderly relative of mine with a washer-dryer as she occasionally needs to dry small volumes of clothes.

I am well aware that most washer-dryers are basically washing machines with a small hairdryer attached and are almost as useless as a chocolate teapot when it comes to drying, but are there any good ones?

I was thinking perhaps along the lines of the Aqualits Washer-dryer as it's got a huge drum relative to other similar machines. I've also heard good things about Electrolux, Bosch and LG.

I have experienced a Whirlpool (rebadged Servis) washer-dryer and wow was it useless!

We don't really want to stretch the budget as far as Miele etc, so there's no point in even going into those.

However we're prepared to go up to a decent upper middle-range price.

Any recomendations / personal experiences would be great.

Also, she's quite OK with dealing with controls, but we don't want anything too fiddly. The Aqualtis seemed like a good comprimise as it's exceptionally user-friendly and also has the option of 4 user-programmable preset buttons for favourite cycles. This would really be quite a cool feature.

What we don't want is fiddly controls that require her to turn the knob to D then X and press Q while simultaniously holding START...

Simple, self-explanatory ... she's certainly not put off by electronic / digital controls, just as long as they're not 'fiddly'.

I used to have a Zanussi washer dryer in 2003. It was the machine with the buttons in a row. I thought that was a great machine. It dried great and the machine washed well and quietly.

My parents have a Creda (Indesit Company) washer dryer and it works okay. The washing machine is on its way out after four years but it does everything it should! There is a build up of fluff around the door but I think thats more due to my folks then the machine, I always clean it out whenever i'm there!

I only have the experience of two machines, Italian made, and they should be on sale in Ireland too:

Candy CLD135, this one washes and dryes a full 5kg load without having to take anything out, the drum is actually some 10 cm deeper than a standard washing machine. It washed well and rinsed ok, drying was all right even if it took 2 hours.
Indesit WD125, this was when I was in Germany, was OK too, it dried faster than the Candy, but also because I did only a half load to have a continuos dry-to-dry process.
I think the Aqualtis is anyway a nice choice, plus, it has a low energy consumtion (for something that dries too) as it is the only A(A)AA class washer-dryer I know of, isn't it?

Plug-n-Play in the UK.

May I assume you are looking for a condenser dryer?
Are there are vented W/D combos left?
Are condensers onyour side of the pond coooled with water or room air?

I am a bit surpised to hear that W/D-ers there are pitful as dryers. Ours are RIDICULOUSLY slow in that a 15a or 20a circuit on 110v is HALF the wattage available to you (plural) with 220v.

Washer Dryers.....

Hi Mr X well plenty of good choices around now, and eco efficiency is better & energy costs are lower for use now compared to years ago!!!...the machine you described wasnt the best to experience!!!todays models certainly arnt "Hairdryers"...Lol

Our best selling Washer Dryers are:
Hotpoint WDD960G 1600rpm 7kgwash / 5kg dry,
Hotpoint Aqualtis AQGMD149 1400rpm, 8kg wash / 6kg dry
AEG L14840 1400rpm, 6kgwash / 4kg dry....
Hoover HNWL7166 1400rpm 6kg wash / 4kg dry

I would IMHO pick the Aqualtis, largest drum and best drying capacity at 6kg load, quiet in action and very easy to programme & use...this drying action seems to be as good as the first W9900 series washer dryers which was the best, plenty of wind power certainly not a hairdryer.

Hey Toggs, have used quite a few washer dryers in my time and have never had bad results on drying only on the fact that its a smaller drum so you have to dry half the wash...Hotpoint & Hoover UK made FAB models in the 80`s plenty of wind power to dry and quick to finish, other machines had lower power fans and relied on higher wattage elements..I remember some german models where almost an oven!!

We had vented washer dryers in the 80`s, now its condenser types using water cooling!!! I wonder when we will see Heat Pump Washer Dryers...Hhhmmmm

AEG and BSH are more user-friendly

They have clear words instead of weird icons that appear on the typical italian made washer (think of the Candy and of the Ariston-Hotpoint). Cotton is "cotton" and not an "A" or worse the icon of a cotton flower ........

One can use a miele, aeg , bosch/siemens even some zann' elux washer without reading the manual.

Miele should be a nice combo but ... for such a price one could buy separate miele washer & dryer and save some money too ...

Zanussi

The following model just scored quite highly and was recommened by 'Which' magazine....

Zanussi ZWD12270W1

...it was also under GBP300
