washing clothes with coconut and soft water

Hi everybody,

I want to get your thoughts on washing clothes with coconut. What are the benefits of it? I've heard it would make a good cleanser, and I have also heard that it leaves a good natural smell.

I do have a whole house water treatment system from rain soft along with the wash day laundry soap that came with it. It's in the powder form.

What are your thoughts and ideas?

Coconut soap has been used in Brazil for decades (if not centuries)

It is AMAZING for clothes, for cleaning and even for bathing!!!!

Exactly the same cheap bar is found in the laundry sink used by very poor people because they can't afford fancy brands and in the soap holder next to fancy jacuzzis used  by super wealthy celebrities.

There are also more expensive brands, powders, liquids, etc. Most of them used to wash either super delicate clothes or the favorite to clean those horrible car mechanic uniforms.

Actually, thank you for the thread! I have a friend coming from Brazil in less than a week and I'll ask him to bring me some bars of coconut soap.

The only problem with coconut soap is that it is too soft, it looks more like a solidified jelly. If you think Dove bars melt fast, that's because you don't know what is using a soap that is as big as a "paver" brick and it dissolves completely in one shower. You don't even need to grate it to put in the washer, just cut the bar and toss a square the size of a Tide Pod in the washer, it will dissolve in seconds. It's probably the oldest "Tide Pods" in the world

You are very welcome. The reason why I ask is because I've heard interesting things about washing clothes with coconut soap. I am using a laundry detergent called wash day which you can order from gohealthy360.com.

There is no ingredientslist on the website. If this is a soap based product, it might not be very suitable for automatic washers. If there are not enough additives, this may gunk up your washer big time.

Once had a short excursion into soapmaking and IIRC coconut is particularly valued for its strong foaming properties. It is also the only real soap that works is saltwater (e.g. on a boat)

So kind of like Kirk's "Coco Castile" soap? This was an old P&G brand that was spun off in the 90's to an independent company. I use it for bathing and it lathers beautifully, rinses well and has no strong perfumes. Never tried it for clothes though...

In that case, be careful of using it in an automatic. I agree with Louis, modern detergents are specifically engineered to work in modern machines.

Soap is not suitable for automatics, although you can still buy a few 'soap powders' which do contain real soap, but have a few extra ingredients (i.e, builders, water softener, bleach, brighteners, defoamer, etc).

Soap alone though, may coat and clog the fibres of the garments, allowing the fabric to go grey.

Has been used in USA and elsewhere to make soaps and other products going back to the 1920's (if not before). Congress in a protectionist fever at one point (IIRC 1930's or maybe 1920's) wanted to impose an excise tax on coconut oil as a way of protecting tallow producers. At that time coconut oil was imported mainly from the Philippines, but there were other sources as well.

I remember coconut oil shampoo, but that was a small operation with a relatively large amount of shampoo and little water. It might be good if you had a lot of liquid coconut soap and a Kelvinator with shampoo washing action during the magic minute.

This morning I asked my friend to bring some bars for me, but after that I realized that maybe this soap bar can be available in those brazilian stores.

Not today, but probably tomorrow I'll go to one of the three brazilian stores here in Los Angeles and see if they have.

This is a new one on me!! I've never heard of this type of soap. Learning something new here. Doesn't ALL use cocoanut in their soaps? Thought I read something about that. Oh well.

This soap is geared for soft water.

I remember when my family and I got a water softener from rain soft. In the soap package, wash day laundry soap was included in both the powder and liquid forms. It took only a tablespoon to an ounce to wash a load of clothes and had a very nice smell.

We have hard water here. I live in an apartment so I can't have a softener installed. But I do use White King water softener with some of my laundry. Mostly whites, light colors if they're very dirty and towels.
