Lightedcontrols brought a situation to my attention today I've not had to deal with before.

A friend of his called Beltmans and used the words "vintage"or "antique" when trying to arrange the shipping of some machines! He was told because of insurance issues--- Beltman would no longer ship such items!

Now, most of the goons they send out to pack thses things up and ship them would not know the difference. Most of 'em would not even know they were washers or dryers unless you told them.

So be careful NOT to use those sensitive words when trying to arrange shipping or the shipper may not care to do business with you!

That might not be a bad thing however. If the shipper won't do antiques, it's probably because they have had past issues where priceless antiques have been shipped and severely damaged, and they are trying to avoid future claims. Chances are if the shipper says they will handle the product, then they are worthy enough to take special care of it!

This is my story.....

The last two items shipped from Beltman have resulted in claims that I am still trying to get resolved-the first incident was in April. The second in June where I bought a dryer from Jimmy that they loaded and forgot to latch the door. Jimmy is on record that when they drove away, the door was going up and down, which was hitting the side of the dryer which resulted in chipped porcelin and dents. I sent them his account, before and after pics of the dryer, and the bill of sale where the driver noted that the door had not been latched and my claim was still denied! Needless to say I am not letting that go! Last attempt to ship I discovered that Beltmann was never supposed to ship household items at all, but considered the appliances antiques and that is how they got around it. Tried to ship an early 60's dryer that they would not consider an antique so I believe that appliance shipping is over. There has been a lot of trouble with damage in the last few months with Beltmann, so maybe this is a good thing.

OK...somebody splain me something....

Let me get this straight....Beltman damages Don's washers, etc. and will no longer ship appliances because they are considered household items. They will, however, ship your priceless antiques. If these guys are damaging something as sturdy as a washer or dryer, what are they going to do to Grandma's Victorola? I just don't get it!!

I have always used Craters and Freighters will excellent results. As long as they are in an area where there is a vintage appliance, I would hightly recommend them.

I am totally with you Venus!
Makes no sense.
Sounds like they have damaged lot's of "items" they ship, and are pulling at strings.
We all need to start a shipping business for appliances and such!

Yes I have had some very good experiences with Beltman and they are MUCH cheaper than Craters and Freighters, but my last Beltman shipment was damaged, and this was the first time that had happened to me. I suspect Beltman is no longer going to ship our washers for us anyway.

I probably will use Craters and Freighters from now on.

I shipped a large antique oil painting from here to California via UPS Freight a few months ago. They were great to deal with, and I had no problem insuring the painting for $5,000.00 either.

I wonder if you guys might want to give them a try?

I sure would not trust any shipping company to ship anything, if they cannot even deliver something as sturdy as a washer without damaging it.

Rick, but would UPS have come through with a settlement if damage occurred? I've heard stories that they'll void the insurance if the item isn't proven to have been packed properly, and sometimes the only way they'll accept that proper packing was done is if it's done by one of their UPS Stores. And there's always the possibility that they'll say the staff at said store didn't do it right either.

Maybe they gotten better since I last ran across those stories.

Hi Glenn, I am the logistics manager for the company I work for, so yes I am sure they would have paid my claim. But you do have a very good point. I do not know how fair they might be to a one time customer. Of all the shipping companies I deal with, I trust UPS the most. BTW: UPS just purchased this freight division from another company, so they are working to create a good impression. At least they were with me.
