I have a Maytag full size stacker front loading washer dryer unit that leaves some water in the lower bowels of the tub, (about a quart or so), after it has finished the wash cycle. If you move the wash tub left and right you can hear the water sloshing around in there. Is there a check valve or something like that in the drain tube that is letting this water drain back in to the unit or ?

Do you visibly see some water in the tub?  If not, the sloshing around that you hear when moving the tum to the right or left is the fluid-filled balance ring that helps the machine balance when it goes into spin.  It's a normal sound.

Some....

Water left inside in a front loader outter tub is normal, but so is for a top loader.
Usually, the water that remains stays within the drain cup, it also happen with top loaders anyway..but some having a still outter tub like a filter-flo for example, can't be moved not being a suspended system so sound isn't made...
Others while having a suspended system, though have a different draining system than a cup and separate electric pump, so the sloshing isn't noticeable as well....
Many models of front loaders I have seen also, have a floating plastic ball in the drain cup/sump that prevents water to come back from the hose, but some models doesn't...
The quantity of water that stays-in may depends on many reasons, such as a long drain hose and or drain located very high of the machine...as the hose is longer or higher more water will come back to the lower point once machine has finished...
The sloshing sound is typical of every relatively new front loader washing machine I've seen in my life, except for the commercial gravity drain ones.... but it's mostly due to water bouncing in the drain cup rather than in the outter tub itself...
As long as machine drains normally the wash and rinse water...there's no reason to worry of anything..[this post was last edited: 12/31/2014-11:14]

Well,  but then it's not  just typical sloshing sound, but it really sounds as if there was water  in it...

I thought of when you mov/shake the whole tub thing like up and down!  But not this!
I don't recall having heard that in the neptunes I used at the laundromat,  even true I don't think I ever manually turned the drum...were all like this???

Water-filled balance rings are peculiar?  Whirlpool has had them on the direct-drive toploaders for years, although they're a separate snap-on piece instead of 100% integral to the basket.

F&P SmartDrive & AquaSmart, and Oasis/Cabrio/Bravos.  F&P specs the weight of the basket per including the balance fluid, a basket out-of-spec for weight is to be replaced (if the fluid leaks out, or someone drills the ring to drain it for not knowing it's required for proper operation).

I suspect the new belt-drive VMW design has has a fluid-filled balance ring.

Yes they're over here....on front loaders anyway...balance rings are also peculiar themselves to be seen in all their forms.
I thought they were metal filled in the Whirlpools top loaders being their drums still made of metal..who knew?? Never heard a sound messing with their tubs....
I was about saying that about the Fisher and Paykel though now that I was thinking about it and became aware of their existence, I could hear  that water sound infact,  but I thought it being the sump, I know these machines have a separate pump and since their suspension seems to be much loose also, I just thought it was the sump , never had a chance to  look or find more about, am not a big fan of F&P in all honesty also...
My aunt had an intuitive eco model, and can't say i liked much how laundry got out of it....even true the tub indexed   more in hers on it's last days..

You never stop to learn....thank you for the info!

Ralph, I personally don't think that comment was very nice.  There are people who come here because the forum has shown up when searching with certain parameters.  We are a resource here in addition our own obsession, fascination, appreciation of vintage appliances and for some of us modern appliances too.  And it's recognized in other appliance forums to check with aw.org.  It's a compliment really, we do know our stuff here.  Yes, people will come and go when seeking resolution or answers to a specific "problem", "issue" or "concern".  I'm personally known for a lot of this related information and am sought out for advice.

OK Bob.  My bad.  I'm feeling grouchy from a badass headcold/respiratory bug that's likely going to require antibiotics to defeat.  Haven't smelled or tasted anything in a week.

I found the OP's profile entries flippant, which is what prompted my post.
