Just had a service call and the repairman advised that then my washer was installed the drain was too low causing a siphoning while the machine was in operation. I had always complained about the extreemly low water level and finally his guy figured it out. Machine is a Duet but accoring to him this is not an uncommon problem, especially in older installations.

Height of standing pipe?

What is height of your standing pipe?
Is your Duet on pedestal?

The recommended height of standing pipe for most FL without pedestal is 24" to 36". If you add pedestal, you need to increase the height of the standing pipe.

The recommended height of standing pipe for most TL is about 36".

Always check with the installation of that washer for the recommended height of the standing pipe.

About 23 years ago I moved into a rental house, replacing a nice Japanese couple. They had purchased the Whirlpool belt drive TL that I in turn bought from them for about $150. The husband had tightly wrapped the connection between the drain hose and the standpipe with duct tape - he said that's how they did it in Japan. The wrapping was tight enough to form a seal. Needless to say, on occasion the washer wouldn't fill, or would fill and then siphon out during the cycle. I removed the tape and wired the hose into place, and problem resolved.

I figure they might have done this in part because there was a clog in the main sewer line for the property... perhaps gunk was backing up the standpipe or something. I got the landlady to fix the clogged main, although I heard she complained to Allah about it.

drain hose on floor

I am sure that this was the way the older people who owned the older Maytags drained the wringer washer...lay the hose by the floor drain. (and it is the way we drained our Unimatic for years....but the water in it had to be spun out of the solid tub before it could drain away, so this was not a problem.)
