Ingemar, the drain itself is identical to what we use for kitchens here in Europe. The 3" is only for the strainer basket or, as you noted, the disposer.
That said, American TLs don't have separate pumps. They have one which is slowest when there is the most water in the tub and fastest when there is the least. It tends to balance out.
And when it doesn't, yup, it makes a mess.

Althought, your post is meant to be light-hearted and fun, I'm compelled to express to you that many of the comments regarding different ethnic group were insensitive and insulting.

I actually lived right behind that White Castle and was quite poor during my college years. I recall my posts saying the bankers were very out of their element and that I complimented some attributes of the locals.
I actually don't talk about the negative attributes of my own ethnic-group and sublcultures; but I assure you I am well aware of them and would have a good laugh should anyone take a poke at me/them. (Pardon the expression. LOL)

The bathroom was painted by us lime green. The kithen and large bedroom were made federal blue. An awful blue-gray that looked like it belonged on a submarine. I had a GE Filter-flo washer in the kitchen (bought at a major sale) and a clothes line out the kitchen window. The 24" wide GE fridge was so old it rounded corners and had a freezer the size of two shoe-boxes, literally! The floors and walls were so sloped you thought you were at-sea!
The reason I bring all this up is that as one may think I am a spolied nasty princess with a snooty attitude. It was a very humbling experience that keeps me (to this day, hopefully) "real". Very different than how I was raised and live now, but nontheless an invaluable experience. Different does not equal bad.
Oh and as for my curtains comments. I don't like polyester. Not the peole who DO like polyester.............
P.S. I don't have ANY friends (by choice) of my ethnic background, if that says anything about what I think of that group........

Your two-car garage is bigger than most of these apartments that house approximately 1 to 6 people.
EVERYONE would have a hard time squeezing in. Again a true New-Yorker has a better feel for these pics, I'd say than most others.

I honestly thought I only had a FASCINATION with washing machines so, when I stumbled upon this website I was completely blown away. My dream came true. AW.org had everything, PICTURES, VIDEOS of my own childhood washers and TONS OF INSTRUCTIONAL INFORMATION that's freely shared. If anything, I dread the thought or idea of having to experience racists in the club. So I repeat, I AM NOT TRYING TO PICK A FIGHT.
But, I have to say you are an incredibly DISRESPECTFUL person and have a very NASTY attitude. I've noticed members leaving the club and wondered WHY...I think you are responsible for people leave the site.

I had to jump in. Toggles has been to my home, and I have been to (a few of) his. He's the first person I met from aw.org in real life. He's a wonderful person, has a great sense of humor, is an awesome cook, is super helpful and giving of his knowledge, and is welcome in my home any time. I'm happy to call him a friend, and wish I had more time to spend with him and our other local aw.org friends.
If he's a mass murderer or a serial killer, then he is a talented one indeed, as I never saw an implements of death, nor did I ever find corpses or parts thereof anywhere in his home or car. Then again, he has made me dinner a few times.

Wouldn't it be a bit more appropriate for all you who cannot stick to the thread subject, argue via e-mail. If you cannot post something on the topic, don't post period. Your ruining the thread for everyone else who does not want to see your complaining. I personally am tired of having to scroll through post after post of fighting. Everyone has there own opinions and should be entitled to it. If I don't like something Panthera says, I just move on over it with my scroll wheel and read the next post. No need for fighting or complaining about his beliefs or anyone's for that matter. I am not racist or prejudice, but I laugh at a good stereotypical joke. If we cannot laugh and make jest about ourselves, what do we have? I have a Spanish boyfriend, a Chinese co-worker, and an elderly co-worker whom I all joke with racially or stereotypically. I don't mean anything by it, and they know it. So much they even join in the fun now and make fun of me for my gayness. Everybody needs to lighten up and relax. You'll be more stress free and probably live longer cause of it.

That if the entire US had the population density of NYC, the entire country would fit comfortably into the State of New Jersey...and there would be lots of space left over for the gardens and farms.

Just out of curiosity, is there a push in those areas of NYC to go with an All-in-one machines so the space can be used efficiently?
I've only been to NYC one time and stayed with friends in a nice building, but for the older developments wouldn't this make more sense? I've never used an all-in-one and I'm not sure I'd like it, but it beats the hell out of schlepping laundry to the basement of the apartment complex or to the landromat.
Anything that gives me the opportunity to keep my lazy behind at my house, I'd be for. I'd even be happy with a Wringer-Washer than going to the laundromat. Of course, I don't know how long my love affair would be though?

I have seen ONE washer/dryer combination unit ("all-in-one") in my travels. It was located in upper Manhattan and was a large-capacity LG brand unit.
Often the problem in older buildings is electrical capacity. I live in the suburbs of NYC in a building that was erected in 1946. There is 110v 30a main electrical service to my unit/apartment. From that, there are two 15a circuits. (That's 3,600w calculated @ 120v). As I jokingly say, I can't use my eletcric toothbrush and a vibrator at the same time.
New electrical requirements in NYC apartments, where the lanlord provides heat and hot water(via fossil-fuels), dictate 110/220v service of 40a MINIMUM. [8,800 +/-watts). Also required are two general lighting circuits of 15a each and two 20a kitchen circuits. Manly smart lanlords install 60a 110/220v service when upgrading/modernising. [13.,200w]In this way when the gas line to the apartment evenetually ruptures it is simply disconnected and an electric stove/cooker (40-50a 220v) is installed.

in a section of Munich which was built prior to the use of gas. For some reason, they never got around to laying in gas lines to this area and, today, our heat is supplied by "Fernwärme" - central block heating with distribution to tens of thousands of homes.
Works great and, where homes also use that heat for warm water, very cheap.
Mine, unfortunately, uses electricity for warm water. Three phase, 470V, 16 amp...
I miss gas for cooking, but induction has pretty much evened out the field. I would think, given that you have the same basic results with 3/4 the watts needed, induction would be the answer for these crowded buildings and their relatively limited electrical supplies. Also reduce the chance of fire substantially.
