One of my coworkers in the 70's - big athletic guy - told me he got out of having to wash dishes at home because he convinced his wife that men were biologically incapable of the act. Something about the sink being too low, or something.

Personally I've never really enjoyed hand washing dishes etc. When I got my first dishwasher in '97 there was no looking back - even though it was a POS Frigidaire. Especially since when I cook I tend to generate a lot of cleanup.

Forget the "old fashioned" way, but long as I have a Dishmaster, I can wash dishes all day.

I have a book from the goddess herself and she has a chapter in it on the PROPER way to hand wash if case of the horriable event that you don't have a dishwasher. I think I would just kill myself......

IIRC from home economics class in junior high school: (the boys HAD to take cooking ("home-economics"technically), and sewing and girls had to taks woodworking and shop.

I HATE washing dishes by hand-so they go into the dishwasher.But if my dishwasher breaks-I then do them by hand-the non-functional dishwasher then makes a good drying rack.this happened a number of years ago-bought a new WP-KA dishwasher-it failed under warranty.It took two weeks for the parts to come.That NEW dishwasher was an expensive drying rack.Its been replaced with a VINTAGE KA dishwasher.the new one sits in the kitchen corner-also lightening blew out its timer board AGAIN-like before.now it can't be fixed under warranty-thats why it sits in the corner.
Wouldn't that fellow have to wash his muffin pan he drinks from by hand?

I'd have to say that handwashing never seems to get some items as squeaky clean as a good automatic dishwasher can.

I'll occasionally wash dishes by hand and use the dishwasher racks as drying racks. I actually find it faster and easier than using the dishwasher.

Sudsmaster you hit that nail on the head. If you grew up in the late 60s-or 70's everybody had tupperware glasses remember them in pastel colors? they even had a tupperware tree that sat on/cluttered the countertop. You could go to anybody's home and know instantly if they used a dishwasher or handwashed dishes...LoL my late mom was a Bob Loader and lots of her tupperware had the "brand" of fire from her kenmore dishwashers heating element, but her glasses never felt greasy.

I will also go along with with that dishes are cleaner from the dishwasher than washing by hand-remember the dishwasher has pressure jets,stronger detergents,and in some cases higher water temps.manual dishwashing just can't equal that.

IIRC automatic dishwashing leads to literally 100 x fewer germs. Personally I like its degreasing abilities.

I am always amazed when someone has a DW but does not use it.
and nothing beats the time I saw the maches doused in bug spray, yet dishes and cooking vessels were stored in it.

I will wash cutting knives, and larger pots and pan by hand. Also pans that I want to keep their seasoning. Also fine crystal or china with gold trim (not that I have much of that). Everything else that fits, goes into the dishwasher.

I detest handwashing dishes, the detergents cause dermatitis on my hands. Rubber or neoprene gloves don't help much either.

I like the squeaky cleanability of the machines, and I love the way the glassware, cutlery and china sparkle in the sunlight. My Sister-in-Law's sister likes the way the glasses feel too (non-greasy).

A neighbour has one, but she doesn't like it; she says that there is a film left on her dishes.

I'd say that it is probably one of the most important machines ever invented.

When I was growing up, my Mom had a ton of Tupperware. One of her sisters was a Tupperware distributor. If there wasn't a lot of dishes she'd handwash the Tupperware. On occasion my sister would be forced to wash a small sink full of dishes too. But when she did the washing she always made sure a nice greasy frying pan went into the water with the Tupperware.
The next time you went in the cupboard to retrieve one of those Tupperware glasses, it would almost slide out of your hand there was so much grease on them. You'd definitely smell what was cooked in that frying pan in those glasses.

I was the only one in the family who said anything about it.
To this day in our home all of our glasses are made out of glass. We don't have ANY tupperware tumblers and we have a few plastic mugs that get used only on occasion. And EVERYTHING goes through the dishwasher for that nice sanitary clean.

At my sisters house she has a ton of Tupperware glasses, and she doesn't use the dishwasher either.......

Plastic - especially the kind that Tupperware is made from - is notorious for absorbing odors and tastes. I also use glass or ceramic for drinking etc. I use "disposable" Glad or Ziplock container for storing leftovers in the fridge. Sometimes for microwave cooking as well, although I prefer glass for that.

I hate when the dishwasher breaks down and I have hand wash everything. Though I always wash my Rada and Cutco knives and my Duncan Miller pieces by hand. I also hand wash ALL of my Tupperware, that is th eonly kind of plasticware I will use and I literally have 200-300 Tupperware containers plus the tumblers and canisters which I use to store and freeze in and for taking my 5 course lunches to work in(I store in Pyrex and Corning in the Icebox no tupperware). I actually know a few people who actually enjoy hand washing their dishes, as strange as it may seem to everyone.
