If anyone else uses Yahoo Mail, have you noticed that the main mailbox page has changed recently?  I keep seeing two windows with a 'spinning wheel' and today I started noticing 'sponsored' messages being displayed as the first unread item in the inbox.  Are they 'improving our experience' again?   If so, they can go to the devil and I'll switch everything to gmail.  OY!!

I've been seeing that same sort of thing for a number of months.

I've also noticed that there's no way to manually throw an e-mail into draft status to finish it up later. Or I've failed to notice how to do it.

It also gets hung up and unresponsive a lot.

Apparently the whole e-mail GUI is trying to look like G-mail now. I'm on the verge of quitting Yahoo and going to G-mail.

I've had problems with yahoo for several weeks now.  Very frustrating.  The most recent annoyance is EVERY time the (mail) window changes I get to answer the question about whether I want to see everything or just the secure data.  I can open a piece of mail and when I choose to reply, I get the question.  Really???  Again???

Yahoo Mail

I use Yahoo (when I can't avoid it ;-) ). I've had the same 'intrusive advertising' for a few months. I'm keeping the account ONLY because I've had it for 10 years or so, and so can remember what it's called. I'm getting too old to remember new information..... :(

All best

'Improving our Experience'

Sadly, I cannot 'edit' my posts. :-(

Yes, I'm sure this is yet another site 'Improving our Experience' by maximising their profits from advertisers and/or using so many 'Java' based 'bells and whistles' that their site takes over a minute to load each page on an older (but adequate) machine. This and Vacuumland are the only 'social media' sites which I can now use. My 'experience' was perfectly good before, and the sites which 'refuse to talk to my machine' are losing my custom. The latest to head that way is Ebay(U.K.), which now takes 15-30 seconds to load each page. Strangely enough all the animated advetisements load immediately, it's only the stuff I actually use the site to see which is delayed. I often wonder whether our esteemed Webmaster has considered starting a general social media or advertising site. There are literally millions of p***ed off people looking for an alternative to the 'big few'.... ;-)

Ok.. Rant over....

All best

I have a Yahoo emailaddress I hardly use anymore. Like other emailaddresses I have I use Mozilla Thunderbird to manage my mail. No need to log into Yahoo and no annoying stuff to deal with. In contrary to Outlook, Thunderbird doesn't download the mail to your computer, it just accesses it. So if you want to check your mail from another computer, that is still possible. I really love Thunderbird, computerwize it's one of the best things I have used.

Ever since...

They dropped the "Classic" Mail, I've hated Yahoo.

It's just so annoying. Switching e-mail address is like trying to change your DNA.

Any suggestions besides Gmail ? I remember when Gmail first started I heard they store all your info. (I suppose now a days they all do). I hate all the ads along side of my inbox, but I don't want to pay for the ads to go away.

I'm not tech savvy, so if there is a format that eliminates all the nonsense, (ads and constant upgrades to make your experience better) do tell. Thanks

Thunderbird doesn't download the mail to your computer, it just accesses it.

It can if you set it to. It's an option. In the Server Settings Panel just click or unclick the "Automatically Download Messages" option. Thunderbird is very flexible, you can make it do what YOU want it to do, not what "they" want you to do.

Thunderbird is an e-mail client ... it interacts with the account server to access the mail content.  It supports both POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) to download messages OFF the server and store them locally on the user's computer, and IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) to view the content on the server and sync the server-side folders with the client-side folders.  Each mailbox account set up in it can be separately configured for the desired protocol.

IMAP is preferable when an e-mail address is accessed from multiple devices, but it requires more housekeeping.

POP3 is preferable when only one computer is used.  Free mail services (Yahoo, HotMail, GMail, etc.) usually don't allow POP3 unless a subscription is paid for premium-level access.  That doesn't make sense to me since much more server-side storage space is required when mail is not downloaded off, but I suppose the reason is that forcing the user to access via web or IMAP allows piggybacking advertising content onto the user's mail which provides a revenue stream to the host.

E-mail tends to be the Internet function that people have the most difficulty understanding because there are so many different ways to utilize it and related parameters and functions.  I deal with customers often regarding these issues.  POP3, IMAP, incoming servers, SMTP, outgoing servers, mail clients, web clients, server-side folders, client-side folders, downloading messages off the server, keeping messages on the server, checking mail from computers, checking mail from smartphones and PDAs and tablets, mailbox forwarding, spam detection, white lists, black lists, SMTP Authentication, SSL and encryption, port numbers, etc.

G-Mail

Avid G-Mail user here.

Use Apple-Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook 2000 and the browser interface. When I first started, I was a POP3 user, but switched to IMAP for ease of viewing mail across platforms.

Google supports both completely free of charge. Or maybe "some charge" if you accept they are advertising in your mailbox, and want to click on the ads and raise them revenue.

RE: (More aptly, JavaSludge)

You may find switching your internet browser helps with the loading times. Chrome is utterly useless even here at AW.org on my HP-Compaq tablet that is ten years old. Firefox has NO trouble. Who has the better browser? Firefox.

If you're using Internet Explorer, ditch it. Do the world's web developers a favour, and your own security a favour and ditch it. There are far better, more secure, faster (etc) browsers that do everything and more.

I have three Yahoo accounts for compartmentalized purposes and am not in love with the quote-unquote new/improved version. Haven't had trouble when using OS-X Maverick (iMac), but it is quirky when using iOS 7 (iPad).

iOS 7: One of my accounts receives a lot of e-mail which is put in the trash without opening/reading. I'll check the box next to each of them, then touch the trash can icon. Instead of going to the trash, the boxes simply uncheck themselves and the mail remains in my inbox. This happens about 50% of the time. Solution: I sign out, then sign back in, and then it works. But one shouldn't have to do that.

Just last night I opened my Yahoo mail and found a sent item sitting at the top of my in-box list. I double checked and the same message was also located where it should have been -- under sent items.

Also, the other night I was composing an e-mail and used the option to italicize part of a sentence. Not only does Yahoo not know how to shut off the italics when you click the option back to normal so you have to trick it into doing so, but this time after tricking it and everything being fine, I started a new paragraph and it reverted back to italics.

There's a reason Yahoo has been struggling for so long. They're all slobs.

I wish changing an e-mail address wasn't like opening up a can of worms. I suppose if there were more regulation, we'd have the option of putting a referral on our account, just like when you move and your phone number changes. I'd be willing to pay a fee for the convenience.

I also get the same annoying "Do you want to download only info delivered safely" message box everytime I click to change mail screens. I also noticed a few days ago that the delivered time on my incoming mail was way off and has continued that way since.

I have had a Yahoo email address for going on 20 years now. I still use it as my "Junk" mail address that I give to all the retailers that need an address to spam me at. I really dislike the new interface but overall it works for the infrequent use I give it.

For over 20 years I used a personal POP mail address that was hosted by my ISP. I typically pulled mail using Eudora but I have also used Outlook and Thunderbird. A year ago I pulled the plug on the ISP and now I use Gmail exclusivly. I'm very pleased with Gmail overall and in fact I even like the targeted ads! There have been a few times that a topical targeted ad actually turned me onto a company or product I was unaware of that ended up being useful. In any case its better then looking at ads that aren't topical isn't it?

I access my Gmail both through their web interface as well as through Mail apps on my iPhone and iPad. I know some folks that pull their Gmail using Thunderbird or other POP/IMAP mail program but I have never seen the need personally. Its one way to get away from the ads or the web interface if you just can't adapt though.

At this point in time I wouldn't consider any other 'free' web mail service other then Gmail. I do have a personal domain registered so one day I may set up a mail server somewhere again, then again perhaps I won't...

I also experienced...

While composing a message, while I'm typing, sometimes I look up and the cursor has jumped either into the subject box or the middle of the previous sentence mid word and ruins all that you have typed before.

I just don't know which mail to change over to. Fortunately, I do have the time right now, so I could spend a few days changing everything over.
