found another one and ran off with it for 75 its complete and in really great shape runs just fine and best of all the agi is red.. woo hoo

this one Is in great shape runs quiet no rust got the new cord and hose on oiled the motor and she is great.. this one has to be older than the first one the tub is thicker and the orig motor is a black old delco not a grey maytag so im hopin its older anyway.

when it gets warm again I want to some how polish the top part of the alu tube and get some rubbing compound and was the body but that's about it. got the head unit all cleaned and lubed and its fine too

That's an old one for sure. I think the red agitator was used until 1955? And the thicker tub is even older. Yours might be late 40's. At some point they went from an aluminum agitator to the red.

well cool that makes me happy.. thanks for the info ill have to get some of that polish.. this is the first bakelite agi that ive ever seen that looks like its new its smooth and shiny

She looks very clean and that agitator is awesome. If you post the serial number we can date her for you and then we will know what type agitator she had in her when new. Let us know her serial number with all the numbers and letters.

What a difference $35 makes!
I remember a Maytag with the same type of red agitator at a lake cabin we went to when I was a kid. I can't remember if the tub was square or round. Perhaps the era of that agitator pre-dated round tubs? I'm not up on old Maytag wringers enough to know one way or the other.

This information was posted here quite awhile ago and I kept it. This is just for information. Post war Maytag Wringers had the following types/colors of agitators in them. This info was for the E, N and J. I don't know who originally posted this but I thank them again.

Red Bakelite 1950 through 1954 ish
Black Bakelite 1955 through 1964
Black Polypropylene 1965
Turquoise Polypropylene 1966 till production ended
We can date your Tag by knowing the serial number.

Saw the other thread and felt the collective heart attack but knew you wouldn't crack a black filtered Gyrator unless you had too.
Wait till you hear how it sounds exactly like the automatics when agitating, that steady low rumble.
JON CHARLES ~ the rollers are separated to preserve them. That was always Geoff Delph's number one rule: Release the wringer and open the rollers.
You need to get one of these. You would be amazed at the wonder of them..

the only wringer I ever had was oh gosh maybe 25 years ago I got it at a farm auction with my dad it was like 5 bucks and it was late 30s. got it all cleaned up and painted and it sat there in the basement for years till one day I decided to use it the first load was fine but on the second load the trans locked up and since I didn't have a clue I gave it away. I remember my grandma doing the thing with the rollers when not in use and she would let me sit on a stool and watch. she had some sort of robot looking blue machine but I remember the sound and the smell oh hot water and cheer

This one appears to be gravity drain
Did you look at your $40.00 clunker to see if it has a pump? It would be easy to switch that out if it does. Or if you have a floor drain handy it won't matter. I added a pump to mine. I didn't think it would make that big a difference but now I gotta say "LOVE THE PUMP!"

As I have gotten older and hopefully wiser, I have found it pays to pay a little and even a lot more to avoid a difficult restoration project. And don't get me wrong I enjoy a bargain as much or more than anyone else, but not having to spend a hundred hours on restoring an appliance is worth more money up front.
Chris you actually had a washer with a Bakelite agitator, the A102P would have only been made with a black Bakelite agitator.

It might have been a Turquoise Whirlpool Surgomatic. The old guy who ran the Dorothy Street Washer Recycle Plant said the same thing and it stuck out in his memory. Love to see one, but no sightings so far. The thing about wringers is that they're fun and hands on, and as Larry points out, the Maytag pumps are really to die for. So grab that pump Chirstopher, and slap her on.
