After living there for 9 and a half years, Dad is closing on the house Friday at 12:30. I've been living at Mom's since January, and moved my collection over in early May.

This is the best wide-angle snapshot I could find of the collection in it's entirety. From about 2 years ago.

This picture, taken tonight. Now it's real, the day has come. The house is no longer ours, the basement where I spent a LOT of time is empty.

Fred your collection is just so very cool! What is so amazing about it is all the colors. My favorites have to be the Constellations. But the vacuum I think I will keep a watch out for at the estate sales has to be the Lewit with the big rubber wheels. I seen a few of them before and I would love to try it, it almost looks like a little portable washer!

New Display

OMG, takes my breath away, totally! It's great that you have that much room for your display, and what a collection! You have such a vast collection, did you start collecting in the womb? Another plus is knowing they've all been serviced by you, so they're showroom new! Great job Fred, you do the Hoover name justice! The Hoover quality and design will live long through your collection!

bittersweet

Speaking as one who'd spend time in the old basement, the empty picture is kinda sad to see.
The new place is nice too, and it looks great.

Did you leave an epitaph in the old basement somewhere?

Epitaph...

Hey Jeff-

No, unfortunately, I ran out of time to do what I wanted to do... Then dad needed the key, and I threw the last thing to come out of the house in my car (a vacuum cleaner, duh!), and was driving away before I knew it. I'm fine with it, really.

But fear not~I did leave my mark in the house. :-)

A move is an emotionally draining thing. I am glad that you prepared for it months in advance, mentally and logistically, and are able to share your beautiful display with us. As Hoover changed the colors over the years, we only saw the changes sequentially. Most of us did not have the opportunity to see them together, but as Robert said, it is stunning to see them arranged like you have them. Your display looks like a shop in OZ, maybe. When you wanted a vacuum, you went to the store and picked one in your favorite color, like clothes, cars and candy.

Did your friend Stan play the organ for the tour group? I still remember the Sunday morning when we went on a tour of the Atlanta Fox. Thanks again for sharing photos of your treasures with us. Tom

Out with old, in with the new

Fred/Taffy/Veda,

Darling, as another who spent time in that basement on several occasions and saw it evolve over the years it must be as Jeff says bittersweet.

I remember sitting down there with Tania, Agnes, Mark T., Stan and Wendy, just to name a few. And the fun we all had with your beautiful Hoovers and others. Some of them I think migrated from Charlotte to Milwaukee! There were always new boxes with stuff and things going out as well. Some things were in the process of being renovated or parted out while in the company of rare, pristine nearly MIB items. And all the new things you have added--just wonderful!

The new basement is beautiful and looks very organized. You must have done some of the layout in your head or on paper ahead of time. Next time I'm in Milwaukee, I want to see this basement too and play with all the new things.

Ever forward and onward. I'm proud of you!

Holy crap!

I'm not a hard-core vacuum guy, but after seeing that display I need to change my drawers!

There isn't a single item in the "before" or "after" pictures that I don't like. I hope you kept the coolass furniture, too.

In the "before" picture, what are all those cans at the very top? The seem to be bigger than soda/beer cans, but maybe it's just my eyes.

Congrats on the new place. Vacuum in good health!

Those cans along the top of the old basement look like they could be cans of cleaner, like Comet, Bon-Ami, etc.

That new basement would do any vac dealer proud! It is very well organized and very attractive!

Hi Fred,

I agree wholeheartedly; it's sad leaving a place you've been so familiar with and have spent a lot of time in over the years. I know I'm going to experience that in the future as well, when I get my own place big enough to keep the machines in and move out of the Studio.

The new basement, however, is just FABULOUS, not to mention your collection! All of those machines in the "upright wing" look like they're right on the showroom floor, and I'm sure the other rooms look great as well!

Now comes the big question: will you have room for some, shall we say, "larger" items in your new basement? ;-)

Wow!

Fred, I thought the old display was awesome...I have to say what Seamus said and that is I am in awe of your collection! You have it beautifully displayed. Thank you for the glam shots! It looks as if you are moving forward in life despite recent changes. Keep looking to the future and all of the cool old Hoovers that are still out there yet to be found. Thanks for posting the pics!

I had the grand fortune to see Fred's former basement display a few years back when the convention was in his town.

Your new display is looking really great too Fred! Enjoy.
