Weren't we just discussing '74 GE's?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Here's the story -

The Dispensall set popped up on CL last week near the Quad Cities, but was originally advertised as just the dryer for sale. I contacted the seller and asked if they still had the washer. They did but a 'bearing' was shot and he didn't want to sell the washer with the dryer, but would be wiling to throw it in for free. He mentioned that the set had set unused for over 10 years as the wife died at the age of 82, and the husband had his daughter do laundry.

I made arrangements to pick up the set in Keithsburg, IL. A 6 hour round trip on the weekend isn't too bad. But after a day of work. UGH.

The set is very pretty, and the dryer seems to work just fine. However, the couple lived about 2 miles outside of town, and operated as seed and feed sellers. To say the washer was full of hard water deposits is an understatement.

I'm taking a stab at June of 1975 for the MFG date, however I'm not as up to speed on GE's secret decoder ring as I am for other MFG's.[this post was last edited: 4/15/2012-22:57]

Now, I wasn't overly disappointed nor surprised when I popped the top. If it would have been mint, then I would have been jumping for joy. It seems grandpa did some handy work at some point and siliconed the top. Too bad he didn't know to use a putty knife to push the latches in on the porcelain top...

Instead I have more hours of fun hard water chiseling to do. Didn't I just get done doing this for the platinum Whirlpool? :)

Mechanically it performs wonderfully. The clutch sounds great.

Good Lord, Ben

You've got a mummy on your hands. Call Boris Karloff.

Here are the two pressure lines running to the diverter, which provide the signal to shoot left or right. No signal shoots to the center. More to come on how this works once the resto is complete.[this post was last edited: 4/15/2012-23:15]

All in all, this is a very cool set and I look forward to working on them. However, the Dispensall set may not always live in Waterloo.

At the moment I'm super busy right now with work and other planned activities, so I won't be able to tear into this anytime soon. However, once it is done I'll do a complete write up, as the Dispensall system truly is very, very cool.

Nasty looking crud. My sisters well water does pretty much the same to her dw and washer. They also have a lot of sulphur in their water (it really stinks) so I wonder if those folks had it as well. We never had problems with our well-water that a simple iron filter didn't fix.

First of all: WAY COOL MACHINES! How lucky that it was just the funnel scraping the wash tub and not actually a bearing.

Being a "Newby", I'm assuming that the Dispensall was the TOL of the GE product range? It certainly looks like a seriously major machine. How much more costly were these than your MOL GE model?

ehhhhh, They're ok (Markus Bachman SUPER !).

I wonder what the seller was going to do with the washer? Just think, he could have decided to call someone and pay them to take "junk" away.

You did really good alright.

Being that your so busy, and may possibly need the floor space, I ,

wow, I could volunteer to drive there and, take those off your hands. You wouldn't even need to pay me.

I just have to get the recently deflated tire on my van changed, first.

Oh, and I've heard that GEs and Westinghouses, once together in the same room, should NEVER be separated. So, If you happen to have anything with a Westinghouse logo, I should probably take them, you know, as a happy family.

OK-You own the HOLY GRAIL of G.E's. i am officially Jealous. (lol) oh,and BTW- Never Knew that the official model name was Americana. nevertheless,Nice Americana set. (and that's coming from a Maytag fan)
