I have to first start out by saying that my wife is a saint. She has tolerated my penchant for all things vintage for a long time, and didn't even complain when it took me 3 weeks to fix our dryer, but yesterday she went above and beyond the call of duty to abandon our afternoon plans to go 30 miles to pick up a grimy Western-Holly wall oven that I'd just won on Ebay. In her car, no less. She got wedged in the back seat for the entire ride home, trying not to get crushed by a heaving, undulating 50 year old appliance. (by the way, it's possible to fit almost anything in a VW golf.).

But I got the oven I always wanted for our house - a single porthole Western-Holly with a lower broiler. It even has the same coppertone finish as our O'Keefe & Merritt cooktop! So the ugly 70's Magic Chef with the one hinge that doesn't work right is going to the curb just as soon as I get this new guy all cleaned up and tested out.

That's a beautiful Oven, I always said if I was to have a gas range it would have to be either a Tappen Doughboy or a Western Holly port-hole window model.

Looks like a washing machine

That is a beautiful oven. Uni, I'm with you on that Doughboy. I've seen alot of those when visiting relatives in the country and it's my dream stove. And they used to be everywhere! I'm sure there are some still working or sitting in a garage or basement somewhere.

beautiful!!

Congrats on the great oven - I've always loved the porthole window in these.

Have you (or anyone) ever seen the movie 'Pleasantville'? They have two of these oven/broiler units in the vintage kitchen - talk about luxury!

Have fun and keep us posted on how it works!

I just looked on ebay again, and this unvelieveable one just came up for sale- It's about the size of my entire kitchen, but man! Double porthole ovens, a griddle, fluorescent lights, completely built into the wall, with the big chrome ring around the whole thing. For a hundred bucks. This is one thing that won't fit in a VW Golf!

Neat oven Chuck! Show us a pic when you get it installed. And it was a bargain too! That makes it even better! Don

Congratulations on your ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS new oven. I always loved the Western Holly portholes. Like something out of the "future that never was."

Wow, that looks like the wall oven that aws in the "Sweet Dreams"--Patsy Cline's story. The one in the movie was white. Chuck you're wife is a saint. God bless her!!! Good luck with the clean-up. And hey, another appliance mystery solved here. (I just love this site).

It could have been a range. But I do remember seeing the movie, one of numerous times (Ed Harris) and noticing an oven had a washer-looking window on it similar to the westinghouse washer that had the timer knob in the center.

I think it might have been the range in the house/set Patsy was living in when she was in the car wreck... I know it was a gas range and seem to think the window in the oven was round! What do you know, another famous Western Holly. They are beautiful ranges - I'd never seen the built in model before, I'll bet that was a real treat to work on!

There was a wall oven like this--in turquoise--in Great Balls of Fire. Winona Ryder was understandably delighted with her new Western Holly.
