With nothing much better to do today, I went out to the antique shops.

One thing caught my eye. A set of salt and pepper shakers in the form of a 1950's Westinghouse laundry pair.

They were a real good price, so I picked them up. I didn't buy much today. Just the shakers and a Supremes: A Go-Go record album.

It seems this is as close to the real thing as I can get.

congrats,

I have that pair in triplicate, one set in green even and I know Ive seen a set in pink once. As a miniature artist I plan to do a miniature laundromat with mine, a corner building with a corner door. Im thinking about naming it the quarter corner but Im wondering if that is about what the price of doing a load of laundry back then so I propose this question to any of you reading this that can make a living testimony what was the price of a load of laundry in that era, anyone? anyone?

laundromats

When I was growing up in the fifties it was twenty cents to wash and ten cents to dry . Prices stayed like that until the early sixties. There were lot of Frigidaire, Westinghouse ,Speed Queen and G.E . Whirlpools didn't show up until later.

Gosh---

I remember when I saw the first set of the laundromat shakers at the Bair's house. They had a 1953 FRIGIDAIRE 30 inch range,a 1960 Whirlpool gas refrigerator with an ice maker and the 1956 Westinghouse laundromat twins in their basement. On their windowsill was the salt and pepper shakers they got with their set but wouldn't dream of parting with them.I found numerous ones in poor condition until I got my computor and ebay. There were so many at one time that I aquired about 30 sets in four different colors and three different styles. One year,1992,I had trimmed my entire christmas tree with them all illuminated in different colors!!!I now have a string of them lined up in my laundry room and 10 sets on my window sills. The ones on the sills are all in the box they came in.I must have realy wanted them so much that my determination got the best of me.They are great though. They hold a lot of salt and pepper and look great on a classic kitchen table with the dishes from that era.
