I received a phone call from the owner of a local appliance recycler store here in Peoria this afternoon about 4:15. He said he had an old Westinghouse Dryer for me. I told him I'd go get my brother's truck and come right over and pick it up. Here is a photo of how it looked in front of the store when I arrived. It has spotty rust on the drumb. So it needs a good cleaning up.

I've been browsing through some of the 2008 and 2009 discussion threads this evening trying to find more about this particular Deluxe model, but I'm not having much luck. I'm finding info and pictures on the earlier model.

Can anyone please tell me more about it based on the following?:

Model: D 8 M
Style: Q54785
S/N: S153056

Thanks,

Mike

Check the Imperial Pink Section:

Hi! Mike, you might want to check out the Dates, but on the Imperial Pink Section for more info.

Those old Slanted-Front Westinghouse Dryers are great Machines. Good Luck with getting it cleaned up and operating. I hope that it won't need very much done to it, besides a cleaning.

Peace, Great Westinghouse Drying, Steve

Dryer info

The D8 M is the next production run after the D8- I think the M model was built late in 54-55 The letter M notes just a slight design change- this one had the pull to start control dial, like the older D6 had- the first D8 had a seperate button one had to push & hold, in order for the dryer to start- I do not remember if this one had the bell ringer that sorta tinkled as the motor slowed to a stop when it was done- does yours? They also got rid of the vent in the front of the toe plate-
It still has the DRY ( auto ) setting on the dial, along with a timed section- it has a cycling t stat, & a " dry-dial " t stat ( that rectangular thing on the top of the outer basket as I recall...) does the timer go to 2 or three hours? I always thought it cooked my clothes, but a cooler t stat would help that-I also had to change out the asbostos lining in the heater box, I used that heavy duty oven foil over some special insulation, & hi temp gasket sealant-the motor likes to be oiled once in awhile too-It can be run on 240, or 115 volts- also, I recommend a very short vent to the outside-

Dryer Dials

Robert (syndets2000): The dryer is out in my garage for the being until I have some time to work on it - will wait till it's a little warmer here in central Illinois. And I don't have 220 in my garage, so I'm not sure what the "running" status of the machine is yet. The timer does have a 3 hour timer, which just floors me that clothes used to take that long to dry in these machines. The photo below shows the dial set to 2 hours 35 minutes. The temperature dial has three settings: Low, No Heat, and Regular.

If I recall a thread from a few years back, the 3h timer was there for when this dryer was on a 120V outlet, instead of a 220V. I guess, if I count the slightly not effecient extraction of the westinghouse slantfront washers and the 120V outlet, it was pretty usefull anyway!

115 volt operation

I think it is hot on the red side of the terminal block, & neutral on the white side, ( nothing hooked to the black..) & I attached a ground to the cabinet- they also went to a three position terminal block on this model, instead of the D8 that had four-the 115 volt is a seperate heater, & much smaller-I also remembered I had to keep it set on LOW HEAT for 115 v.- on high heat, it went cold.... that will tell you if it runs & heats, but in a cold garage, it will take time to really heat up, hence the 3 hr timer...

Thanks

Robert, Thanks for the wiring tip. I'll give it a look, and try to wire it for 115. LOL - you are right, it's really going to take a long time to heat up out there in my garage.
