does anyone know if westinghouse makes major appliances any more? if so...where are they available?/thanks/m

Westinghouse appliances are still available, but are rebaged Frigidaire machines from the mother company Electrolux. They are targeted for the more economy minded user. They are in very limited distribution. Try to find an independent Frigidaire appliance dealer for more info.

Hi Mark:

I just bought a frigidaire Gas Stove with Convention Oven From Lowe's, This stove is really awsome and boy do I love the Convention oven. What really suprised me was the price, I thought for sure it would have been over $1,000.00 but it was priced 695.00

I have a floor polisher you might be intrested in..I'll check to see what kind it is when I get home. I bought a 1924 craftsman 4 years ago...I got the polisher from my parents basement...thought I could wax and buff my hardwoods...not sure why but it did'nt work on the floors like it did when I was a kid...I think the floors we had must have had a varnish seal on them....they were always bight and glossy...anyway I did'nt get the same effect with the floors I have now. I understand about the collecting thing....I could fill my garage with washers, dryers and stoves...I used to think I was'nt right...LOL!!! If you'll let me know what the vac looks like your looking for I'll keep my eyes peeled. Most all my friends have some love affair with older things..we are forever going to estate sales and flea markets...they tease me and call me the "flea market slut"...LOL!!!:)/mark

Hey Mark:

Thanks so much, the converto has an A frame handle and the bottom part is quite big and wide it's square and looking at it from the front You see a hose outlet in the dead center where the hose goes in at. They came in 2 colors the lower end model was turquiose and the high end model was brown, the difference between the 2 is that the brown one has a headlight where the turquiose one doesn't.

Thanks Again Skip...

Mark, Westinghouse Electric Company stopped making appliances in 1972 but they actually live on as Frigidaire appliances and used to have the White-Westinghouse label, probably what your laundry machines from the 80s had. I don't even know if WW exists as it was kind of an economy brand. The small Sears Kenmore frontloader, a FridGEmore, could replace the WW you used to have.

Living in Pittsburgh, it is so sad to see what happened to Westinghouse, they used to make everything else here and the appliances in Ohio. The Westinghouse nuclear division, the only part left of the original company, is part of a British company now.

I bring this up because once in the 80s our environmental science class to a field trip to a Westinghouse training facility for nuclear power plant operators. We got to see control room from behind a glass screen. Nearby was a lunch room that had, of all things, GE Appliances! The least they could have done was buy WW, Grrr.

Oh, heres the link to the George Westinghouse Museum, with the Appliance Room that you may want to visit if you ever get up here. Nep

Hey Bob:

If You ever run across a Westinghouse converto vac get it and I will definately buy it from You for that matter anyone on this forum as that's my dream machine

hey nep:
thanks for the info..I guess that explains everything. Your right my set from the 80's was WW. I guess I love that brand so much because it brings back great memories. Everything my parents owned came from W....Mom had a grayish vac that looked like a rocket and had westinghouse written down the side...when she was'nt looking I'd sit on it and pretend I was ridding on a rocket..(the life of an only child...LOL). Anyway I'll check on the fridiare line. I'd really like to have the front loader stacker set. A friend of mine got a set from Sears back last fall...there cool..I'm just not right with the platforms they sit on..I know he got them so he would'nt have to stoop down...but then one has to do that anyway with a traditional dryer. thanks for the link info..I'll check it out./makr

Hey Mark:

My mother had the exact vacuum cleaner as well it was bullet styled and had a burgundy cloth hose and burgundy attachments but it funny that vacuum didn't impress me but the Kirby 561 and the compct c4 turquiose sure did.

PS Mark did I discribe the converto vac pretty well to you?

Hey Skip:
Hope your having yourself a good day. Perfect on the description...I'll keep an eye peeled for sure. I live in an old neighborhood..always estate sales going on...lots of elderly folks that have lived in the hood since the 30'and 40's..passing away..so lots of times their estate sales are just loaded with goodies. What elese is going on with you? just hot and steamy as a mother here today...heat and bugs...life in the south...lol..take care/mark

Hey Mark:
I'm on vacation this week THank God, so far so good. I'm suppose to be going to Cajun Vacuums because the owner Gerald has 2 buildings full of old vacs and has promise me that I can go see if there is anything I want. Boy Mark would that be a miracle if I ran across a converto vac, I think I would sure drop if there was one LOL.Yes very hot weather here as well We had thunderstorms since Saturday but They stopped since last night.

Hey again skip:
Good luck on the vac hunt..sounds like your close to being as as happy as a pig in mudd...LOL!!! I love to go places like what you've described...it's like looking for buried treasure. I cant belive your having a hard time finding one...but I've learned that when you collect older things...the hunt is the best part of all. Are you a good cajun cook? I have a friend here that's from someplace in L..he makes this dish with shrimp..but he fries the shrimp first than mixes in a bunch of other stuff..it's wonderful...I dont know what kind of shrimp he gets but..your supppose to eat it with the shell on...hummm...that always kinda werids me out. Keep me updated on your search..good luck...have a good evening/mark:)

Skip, was the Converta Vac an upright or a canister? Is there another one that looks even somewhat like it or even a picture somewhere? (I tried the Westinghouse museum website but could not find it, I might have to pay them a visit). I might go a few estate sales this summer. We have a lot of seniors, many of whom used to work for Westinghouse so I will see what I can find.

It still makes me mad that we went to see a Westinghouse nuclear training facility and the lunch room had GE appliances. Does that make me strange?

converto vac

Hey Bob:

The Converto vac has a A frame Handle that comes off and You can then use it as a canister vac, the bottom of it is square and looking at the front dead center is the hose outlet. It was made from 1963 thru the early 80's as it was in competation with the Hoover dial-a-matic. It came in 2 colors, the turquiose with out the headlight and the Brown one with the headlight and the attachment were an option with it.

Mark

Hey Mark:

Yes I'm tickled pink with excitement to go to Gerald's and see what's in those 2 buildings, that would sure be a miracle to find a converto vac. He told me he had an old upright with 2 back swiveled wheels and that sounds like a Eureka M which I have a burgundy one in my collection. I have a feeling he probably has alot of old Kirbys. Yes Mark believe it or not I do cook the cajun dishes although I'm pure German. I must be a pretty good cook because when I cook everybody goes for seconds. I'm puzzled about your friend cooking shrimp and leaving the shells on, it sounds like he is cooking a jamablya but I know of no dish where You keep the shell on. I know with a soft shelled crab You eat the shell and all but it is a soft shell on it. Well yes Mark I definately will keep You updated on my vac hunting

Take Care Skip...
