What 2000 can buy you this very minute

i happened on this today.Not nearly perfect, do you think that this is worth what they are asking for it? I would say not. What do you think? Pretty cute, just pretty steep in my humble opinoin.

Nice machines and cute yes, but they are not pristine by any means, and the washer is broken besides!

They are nice but need restoration, and a total refinish. They are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for them. In my opinion they are worth about $300.00. That is what I paid for my unrestored 1958 pink Maytag set a couple years ago.

wow, the rude note to seller...ouch on all sides! but the seller IS a clown...at least polish the chrome, show me the tub and fix the issues with the workings and fix the scratches before you try to charge me $2000

Someone somewhere decided that vintage appliances were "hot" and every tomdiknharry who sells stuff that runs across anything made before 1980 thinks they're gonna strike it rich with whatever it is. We've run across this with other vintage appliances...we want a red Chambers stove that won't cost us an arm, leg, or offspring...good luck to us on that, from what we've seen. We can only hope that the "market" (ugh) cools down soon.

I also saw this set listed before. While I think the asking price is ridiculous for people like us who collect/sell/trade, the old saying "There is a buyer for everything" is true. Shame on whoever sent a rude e mail. As with everything, if it's not for you, just pass. On the positive side.... if they actually sold... we might benefit by being able to jump on board and unload something and make a hefty profit. Just a thought.

Which one of you isnt offended by ridiculously priced, flawed non working and damaged merchandise? Which one of you thinks its ok to sell non working items for exorbitant prices to unsuspecting people? You are all knowledgeable about antique appliances, but there are those out there that are not.

I have sold some things on eBay previously. I havent had time lately and they have raised the fees again. I barely broke even before.

His fees will go something like this;

Listing fee- $500.00 or more =$4.80 plus each picture and extra costs more like gallery photos, highligted listings, extra long (time-days) listings, and captions.

Final value fees-
Equal to or Over $1000.01= 5.25% of the initial $25.00 ($1.31), plus 3.25% of the initial $25.01 - $1,000.00 ($31.69), plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance ($1000.01 - closing value)

so in other words, he will have to pay a pile for the final value fees and the listing continues to cost him money. Thats the beauty of craigslist. On craigslist, people would flag him till he couldnt post one add that stays. At least they would in the Detroit area.

Unfortunately, that is part of the "eBay culture" we live in now. He didn't sell them when listed before and he probably won't sell them now. I see from the pictures that he shoved the modern dryer out of the way to plug in the pink 'Tag for the photo-op. When he gets sick of storing them, the price will come down. I paid three hundred for my pink set, combined with another set, but they still need cabinet painting and a little tweaking here and there. Even with all the money, time and effort, I wouldn't delude myself into thinking it's "pay off the mortgage time" by any stretch!

it only happens if you let it. and if you're stupid enough to pay that kind of money, you deserve to lose it. would you walk up to the manager of sears and tell them they're f***ing crazy? sending emails like that to people is cowardly. if the guy wants 2K for them, who the heck are YOU to tell them they can't? last time i checked this was a free market society.

People like this make it difficult to find a reasonable vintage appliance because surely if this guy is asking 2000.00, grandmas set should be worth 1500.00 or at least 1000.00 and so on and so forth. Luckily for you, they werent valued at that much when youy began your collection now were they? Saying things like its a free market society doesnt help and is frankly stupid. More stupid than a pair of kids with a tax return wanting a vintage set of appliances for themselves or maybe as a gift for someone, and not knowing any other way to find them. You'll notice he has other sets in the background? There are sharks everywhere. He's just the first one to allow everyone to see him told off. You dont have to post the questions you know.

You were outraged and offended at the cost, else you wouldnt have put them on here for all to see. So market share that.

This is what happened......

In late 1999, I saw this set listed on Ebay. I put in a large bid (or what I considdered to be a large bid at the time) since they were originally from Georgia, and had no problem with going to get them. I was outbid the very last minute. I contacted the winner and told them that if they ever wanted to sell them, that I would take them. I was told at the time that the wife was doing a retro pink house and would use them as her regular washer. I sent them emails detailing the restoration for those machines so they would last another 20 years or so, without repair, and even offered to find the parts. They thanked me and that was that. They paid $250 for both and shipping, if they had them shipped but they may have gone and picked them up. Anyway, now they think they are sitting on their retirement fund or something. They NEVER restored these machines and most likely just used them till they quit. Mark

Wow Mark, so that was *THE* Maytag set you were telling us about a while back? VERY interesting. Typical behavior of the "Suzy Homemakers" or "Betty Crockers" that by a vintage machine (that they have absolutely NO understanding of no less) to finish off their "retro" home, kitchen, etc. The fact that they simply used them as "daily drivers" until the pump failed on the washer doesn't surprise me the least bit.
