Can anyone tell me about the washer (or dryer...I'm not sure which) in this picture? I scanned this from a 1956 "Better Homes & Gardens Decorating Book."

it looks like an extremely early version of a GE Combo. Never saw one with a panel like that--resembles the panel of the GE Filter-Flo washer JetCone grew up with--my mom had the same year his had, but it dind't have a Filter-flo system. I have since found out it was kind of a "special" edition--just why my mom would have picked it, because it was unique version.

It could've been one of those so-called "builder's specials" models (usually built-in appliances) that are expressly marketed for new-home developers.

The front of this machine is like the one that appears in the pic of the day GE ad showing built-in appliances, I think the one that Robert has altered the text to read "Tramatize your homes". I think it is shown in Cadet Blue.

According to page 45 of the February, 1955, issue of Southern Appliances, this is model WD660M, GE's first free-standing combo. That is confirmed by an illustration on page 49 of Appliance Manufacturer's General Electric Review in January, 1955. This was the machine with the two speed transmission and a drum with 4 baffles. We have the undercounter version of this machine in the cadet blue GE modular kitchen we took out of a home in Virginia.
