Hey guys.... I don't know if this has ever been discussed here before or not, but just wondering what you all shave with. I assume at least some of you like to shave the old fashioned way since you are into vintage stuff :o) I haven't had to buy razor blades for two years because a friend who worked at a hotel got a lot of samples of multi blade shick razors.... He gave me two grocery bags worth and I've been using them and then throwing them away. Well, I'm almost out of them, so I decided to look for alternatives to the Mach 3 that I had previously used (never tried a Fusion).... the cartridges were more expensive than I wanted to pay. I ended up getting a Merkur long handle classic double edge safety razor. I like that it's all metal and that blades are SO cheap for it. I also have a straight razor that I tried just once.... but after I almost bled to death, I put that sucker back in the cabinet. I got a mug, brush, and shaving soap too. I also got a sample pack of 60 different blades from 10 manufactures so I can see which one I like best. I expect it will take me long time to go through them all, especially since each blade has two sides. I have had it for about a week, and though I've cut myself a few times and haven't quite mastered the technique, it has made the whole experience more fun and rewarding. I used to shave in the shower without even looking in a mirror... did my whole face in 30 seconds. Now, it takes several minutes in front of the sink/mirror and I prepare properly (hot face first, lots of hot water)...

So, do any of you use an older method to shave with, or do you just use the electric razors or 50 bladed cartridges that cost 30 dollars for a box of refills? I think there is just something about doing it the old fashioned way... can't put my finger on it.... I also like to write with fountain pens :o)

If there's one thing I don't like, it's shaving. I hate having to do it every day.

I really do not like razors. They irritate my skin.

I prefer electric shavers. I have yet to find one that gets close like a razor though. I recently got the Norelco Arcitec and it's pretty good. Even though it's not razor close, it's good enough for me, since I hate doing it anyway.

I either use a Philishave turbovac 4080 beard trimmer or if I want to shave completely I use another Philishave 5000 series rotary blade shaver, no wet and dry having for me!

After Years Of Experimentation....

I have found the cartridge blade/shaving cream system the best for me. I don't like to pay 4 or 5 dollars for a new package of Sensor cartridges, so I buy mine at the 99 cent store. They work just as well; I've even shaved my face successfully with the so-called "women's razor" cartridges. I suspect those are just like the men's versions except for color.
As for shaving foam, I long ago gave up on the more expensive gels and now buy the cheaper brands of foam. I can't tell the difference. Some of my friends have had success with shaving in the shower, so I may get a no-fog mirror and try it out soon.
I used to use double blades like my dad used (he wouldn't shave with anything else), but I switched to cartridges after one too many cuts on the face.

I started to shave in 1977,

and gave it up for good in 1978. I had the choice of fighting for a sink and a mirror in the dorm bathroom, or 10 minutes more sleep.

I forget the model designation, but I have a Wahl beard trimmer that I use every few weeks. #3 guard.

Generally use electric rotary shaver.........

but, from time to time I do blade shave using foam and the cartridge type razors. Excepting the irritation from the blade I think that razors are best for closness and having to do it less frequently. I generally use the electric for time purposes and I don't like having to do it as some mentioned above. Electric shaver is not as close a cut so I have to do it more often but usually put it off until I just have to do it.

If I tried the shower or a straight razor I would probably cut my face right off my head - I stand in front of the mirror. Also use a Wahl beard trimmer for my beard.

Fusion for me

I shave all the hair off my face.i stopped the mustache thing after moving south. The sun would bleach my hair and make it platinum.I look a lot older with any facial hair and keep my hair as short,if not bald,as posible.I don't mind wearing any head covering to shield it from sunburn but,it's been so short for so long that the scalp doesn't get sunburn anymore, just gets darker.

I use a Gillette Fusion Power razor and Zirh shave gel or shave cream. I also like their Prepare (pre-shave oil). I don't recommend the non-powered Fusion razor, as when the (replaceable AAA) battery went dead I found it to be no better than any other manual razor. But the vibrations it produces when powered really make a big difference in the quality of the shave.

Neither the Zirh gel (which reminds me very much of a 60's hair product called Dippity-Do) nor the shave cream produce any lather/foam, which makes for a very close shave.

I also do a double shave: Once with the grain, once against. It produces the closest shave I've ever had, and only takes slightly longer than a single shave. I generally don't reapply gel/cream; I just wet my face and the lingering product suffices for the 2nd pass.

I used my favorite Norelco for years but the batteries died and I've not gotten around to getting replacements, I used to be able to get them locally, but no more. Have to get them on ebay.

Anyway I've been using cheap triple blade cartridges and while they do shave much closer they are irritating, much prefer my old trusty Norelco. The plus side is with a blade i can go 2 or 3 days with out shaving whereas with the razor I have to do it most everyday. Wish I could get away with the stubble look, but it doesn't work on me...

I use Edge no fragrance free gel. Gillet Mach 3 for cheeks and neck. Gillet Sensor for chin and sideburn area. Norelco rotory electric razor for mustache area, just works better. I shave in the shower every other day. Man Groomer for the back see link.

Schick Twin blade disposables, about one every 3-4 weeks as I only do the neck and touch up the cheeks, right after drying off out of the shower. Might take 10 seconds.

I use a Gillette Fusion razor and the Fusion Sensative Skin shave gel. I do find the repalcement cartridges very expensive so I look for and cut out the $4 off coupons for the razors and just buy a new one. I have a Wahl beard and mustache trimmer for other trimming. It is the one with the vacuum in it, it does vacuum up the trimmed hairs fairly well but some do fall in the sink. I have tried an electric shaver when youger but never found one I raelly liked.

I use either the Schick quattro or the Gillette fushion razors. I also do the double shave method. I generally use Gillette gel shaving cream and shave in the shower. I use to use clubman shave cream but, it's getting to hard to find. After shaving I use after shave and shave talc. I also collect razors, mugs, and anything that goes with shaving. I have tried all of my razors (except for the straight razors) at one point or another with the soap, mug and brush. I enjoy shaving!!
