I figured it might be a neat topic.

This can apply to anything laundry/dish/dishwasher related, and any household cleaners really.

Smell is a huge part of why I choose anything, as long as it doesn't interfere with the purpose it should serve. I also have a lot of memories and emotions that tie directly with certain scents.

Gain is my all time favorite laundry detergent smell. My aunt Robin is one of my biggest role-models, and I don't even think she knows how much I admire her and follow her example on certain characteristics, but I always especially admired the way her laundry and house smelled. She also uses Downy Spring & Renewal, or did for a good while. That combination seems to embody all the good memories of being at their house, which for a time was my paradise in the midst of issues at home.

The Downy S&R scent on its own also reminded me of a boy I used to have a huge crush on, so I think that the memories tie together nicely somehow.

I also loved the smell of orange scented Electrasol powder. The orange Finish Powerball Tabs are very similar, but are missing something, yet it's the closest I can get anyway. I would love for RB to bring back the green apple scented PB tabs as well.

Dawn DirectFoam (Fresh Rapids scent), the orange Swiffer WetJet solution, and a certain Tide scent that I can seem to no longer find nor remember the name of are a few of my other favorites that come to mind.

No Scents at all here.

I used to like the scent of StaPuf fabric softener, but once that disappeared, I never used anything.

I just rather have everything rinsed out and no fragrance left.

I use Persil Universal Powder, Miele Ultra White, and Miele Ultra Color. After an extra rinse, there is a barely traceable fresh scent.

And yes, I am weird about cleaning chemicals too. I've read that a lot of the ingredients and scents are toxic.

My detergent cocktail of regular Tide, a dash of Persil, percarbonate, and STPP leaves a faint fresh air smell. I don't want a punch-you-in-the-nose smell of ANYthing. Softeners, wet or dry, are prohibited and quite uncalled for.

Funny -

Gain is my favorite too..

My Aunt Linda had a BEAUTIFUL home when I was growing up. I was always fascinated how spotless everything was and it had a certain smell that just, until recently, I could never figure out what it was. A very clean smell. I even asked her and she had no idea. I figured out what I think it was but I'm not absolutely sure. It's the scent of essential orange oil, but not FRESH essential orange oil, but almost a faded scent to that, almost like someone put some orange oil on something and a few days later it has a faded orange smell.....That's what her home smelled like. I think seeing her house and being fascinated by it is one of the reasons I'm such a clean/neat freak.

I Could Not Tell You....

....Because every one of my favorite cleaner scents - every last one - has been changed.

I can't smell the old Oxydol any more, nor the old Wisk. Spic 'n Span's old scent is gone. There's no more Sta-Puf, no more Original Pledge. They recently went so far as to take the freaking pine oil out of Pine-Sol, leaving a "scent" that smells like someone peed in a bottle of Sprite.

More and more these days, I'm reminded of a passage from Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca:

“If only there could be an invention that bottled up a memory, like scent. And it never faded, and it never got stale. And then, when one wanted it, the bottle could be uncorked, and it would be like living the moment all over again.”

The only thing du Maurier failed to foresee was that scent itself would become a transient thing, something to be changed at the whim of a "product development team," leaving a generation of consumers with a memory that could never be re-visited.

Sad.

My favourite scents in laundry detergents are:

Dynamo Liquid - Such a classic clean laundry smell, i hope they never change it.
Persil (UK) Small and Mighty Liquid - its a strong scent but I just love it.
Gain - I love the Original scent.
Omo Sensitive - because it has no scent and therefore allows me to enjoy the fabric softener of my choice.

Fabric Softeners,

Too many to list but favourites are Fluffy Sweet Temptations and Lenor Sunshine (UK). Also Duel 'Soft Lotus' softener is always to hand in my laundry.

Household

Recently had a chance to use some Gain Cascade dishwasher pacs and loved the way they left the dishwasher smelling of Gain.

I love the Febreze and Air Wick products, favourites include the Linen and Sky or Rocky Mountains and Cool Febreze air fresheners or the Air Wick Filter and Fresh system with the Lavender scent vial.

Not really fussy with the spray and wipe cleaners but usually grab the Green Apple Pine O Cleen or the Fresh Eucalyptus Pine O Cleen Spray.

There have been many scents come and gone in the past that I have loved. I am particularly annoyed that they have just changed Fluffy Jasmine Fresh softener to a new 'fresher' scent completely unlike the old one which I adored. Thank god I had two big bottles in stock and can source more from the smaller lesser known shops.

Good thread :-)

I love scents, my fave thing and I so many.

In terms of my fave, fave gotta say Tide Original Powder and Downy April Fresh.

(I am in UK and will pay the extra to get this).

Also like the new Lenor (Downy) Unstoppable beads - Blue ones.

But I have so many favourite scents - Like Ariel, comfort etc.

Bad news, I think they're gearing up to change the Persil S&M scent with the introduction of these new duo liquid/powder pods that they have just launched. It's not a bad smell though.

I could be wrong, they may have changed it already when they changed the bottle design and formula on Small and Mighty, that was about 6 months back. Not sure when you last got some.

Fresh Rapids Scent

I have quite a few Cascade Complete boxes, with that exact scent. I too, like it very much lol. I actually *have* some orange scent Electrasol Powder, I'll have to give it a sniff.

I just recently discovered Tide with Febreze (Spring & Renewal) and have started a form of love affair with the stuff. I mean, I LOVE the light fresh scent it leaves behind. Just wish it was in a Powder, as I pretty much never, ever use liquids.

Spring & Renewal, reminds me quite well of Mexican Ariel. Although, I've never seen the Downy in that scent, I'll have to look. It's a wonderful scent. It really is.

Spic n Span scent

Oh, that brings back memories, Sandy! It is to this day my favourite household product scent.

I also used to like the scent of ABC laundry detergent in the powder form. It was a Canadian 'bargain brand' but I just loved the scent of it.

The only modern product that appeals to me is Murphy's Oil Soap. Picky, picky.... LOL

For a trip back to your childhood (at least it was for me) try a jug of Charlie's Laundry Powder.

Also one of the newer Woolite flavors (For Darks) has a great residual scent imo.

Oh almost forgot original Dawn. Maybe it's just me but I can't use it without smelling Seagrams whiskey.[this post was last edited: 9/2/2014-16:39]

The smell of Cinch glass cleaner reminds me of my childhood; as far as I can tell it has not changed since then like spic and span has.

Comet,Spic n Span, and Cascade all had the same pinish scent. I don't know why P&G evrr even considered changing their aromas. Cheer too. I miss the original scents too. Gain original is my favorite. I use their Flings, their powdered original, non HE, their liquid fabric softener and dryer bar. When I use my Rainbow vacuum,I put a capfull of the softener in the tank with warm water. Makes the house smell great for hours!

I love the smell of Gain Original powder. I use the liquid too but the powders scent seems "softer" than the liquid. I also love the smell of Tide w/bleach, seems very light and soapy rather than floral or fruity.

My favorite cleaner scent is the Mrs. Meyers geranium, love it!

I'm glad so many share my love for Gain! :)

I actually just bought some Flings on our beach vacation. The condo had a compact stacked GE Spacesaver set, which were 100% Whirlpool DirectDrive right down to the lint filter built into the agitator's upper half. My cardinal rule is that no laundry pods shall ever enter my home, but since this was essentially a Barbie-sized washer, and the Flings are easier to transport, I made an exception. I'm not fond on the smell though. Despite being "Original Gain" scent, they smell nothing like the powder. These are just too perfumy.

I'll have to try some of these that everyone is listing. It's nice to explore other smells so that when deciding to come back to the usual, it's almost like the smell is amplified. I can tell when my nose gets accustomed to the scents because I'm wary of clothes coming from the machines, afraid they don't smell fresh, but it's really that I'm just used to it.
