Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I've been trying to find more about this machine but I've been drawing blanks... There are no more photos of the washer, alas. The seller enlisted the aid of one of their teens with a smartphone to take the photo they posted in their ad and only one photo was taken. I will point out to them that one must have the 'money shot' when selling a washer! LOL

The Coronado resemblance that Tom mentioned has been bugging me - and out of the blue, I remembered something that I only discovered last fall: Western Auto did have some stores in Canada. The rest is just theory: Maybe, just maybe, they sold major appliances branded as 'Dominion' in Canada. 'Wizard' was not really a brand that translates into French and other Canadian store-brands at the time did (eg: Viking,Kenmore). Anyway, a look at the name plate should help!

Now, a much more important question: Can I safely transport a 'what I now think is a Coronado' washer on its back?

It will be about a 6-hour drive with from the Saguenay to Ogden and I really don't want to repeat the foolish thing I did to the 63 Frigidaire Deluxe washer when I got it!

A clue!

While trolling the Ontario Kijiji ads (sssh...Hubby thought I was watching 'Hoarding' on TLC...) I found an ad for an ironer made by ... Wait for it ... DOMINIO!

Not a lot of information, but the seller took a photo of the model plate...

Can't wait to get the washer!

I don't think I'm hallucinating

I remember seeing a smallish Western Auto store on E.Hastings in Vancouver back in the 70's. Never went in figuring it was just a tire store or something.

Dominion also sold a lot of small appliances here as well but as Samson-Dominion, sort of a budget line

Its a Beatty WonderMatic! I had one once. Long story but its gone now. Solid porcelain tub machine. Should have a 3 vane aluminum agitator. Very cool find. It has a unique reversing motor tranny made by Beatty right here in Fergus Ontario.

You can go to the Wellington County Museum and Archives web site and bring up collections and catalogues. Beatty is listed and has many pictures.
I just heard on the radio today that GSW that bought out Beatty just layed 350 people off in Fergus. That is a lot of people for the size of the town.

Beatty WonderMatic

WOW it looks like Eddy has identified this washer, cool now it must be saved Paul. Paul what were the Moffat Combs like, were they similar to any US machines?

It should not hurt this  [ or almost any Top Loading washer for that matter ] to move it on its side. Some washers do have vent holes on the transmissions that will leak oil, if layed on the wrong side, so it is often best to check the washer after it has been its side a while and if it is leaking roll it onto another side.   And NO you can not bend the spin shaft by leaving ANY washer on its side, Jon you missed Aprils Fools Day by a couple of days with this remark, LOL.

Moffat combo

John, I think the Moffat combos were a Norge design (their early dishwashers were D&M's so I won't even bother looking for one for you... LOL). I've been looking for documentation on the Moffat laundry products, but haven't turned up much... yet!

I am so excited about getting this machine. Gotta get the station wagon back on the road and then that's it - the 2013 season will be officially open!

It's so awesome when a Beatty shows up somewhere. The build quality of some of their appliances are incredible. Their water pumps are built like TANKS. I've seen first hand their 40's era piston pumps in service well past Y2K.

The name Dominion rung a bell so I dug through whatever Beatty documentation I had when I cleaned out my grandfather's workshop (in the 50's and 60's he sold and serviced Betty and Westinghouse appliances exclusively in the Perth County area). Sure enough I found a GSW memo from December 1962 noting that with the merger all Beatty and DOMINION parts orders must be sent to another address (which for automatic washers was the GSW service division in Toronto) so I gather that GSW was selling the last of Beatty's old inventory under the Dominion name.

Patience...

I still have to get the station wagon out of storage this weekend (it SNOWED in Ogden last night much to my dismay...) I am planning on heading out to get this on Thursday the 11th. I promise a full initial report Friday and maybe even some wash test results!!

update

Just confirmed with the seller that I will be picking up the washer on Thursday (April 11th). The station wagon has been taken out of storage and readied for the trip. It's going to be a loooooonnnnnng day on Thursday - 6 hours up to the Saguenay region then 6 hours back - I should have the first photos Friday!

Wheeeee!!

Now, let's all hope that there won't be any more snow this week (it snowed Saturday in Ogden...BLAH!)
