What Size is Your Bed and Which Mattress Do You Have?

I have had a queen-sized bed most of my since getting rid of my “super-single” waterbed in high school. I have always loved the idea of having a king-sized bed, but it seemed excessive for just me (and my dog).

I have tried various types of mattresses over the years, and was not happy with my last mattress purchase from about a year ago. I told myself that when I purchased my next mattress, I would upgrade to a king and replace the bedroom set I purchased from Big Lots about 16 years ago. Haverty’s had a great Independence Day sale, and I found a great king bedroom set at a great price so I finally upgraded. Costco was having a good sale on their Stearns & Foster mattresses and box spring for much less than they were selling them at the furniture stores and department stores, so I bought those there.

So far I love the bedroom set and the mattress. My master bedroom accommodates the set nicely so it does not crowd the room. The size of the bed does seem HUGE when lying on the bed, but i enjoy having the extra room. The only downfall is that I have to replace all of my sheets and blankets. I had a few sets of sheets I really love, and I’m having a difficult time finding that brand and style again. Overall I’m very pleased with my purchases.

What size bed and what type of mattress do you have?

California King Restonic Innerspring mattress and box spring that we bought in 1983 and its still just as good as new. We’ve always kept a good mattress pad on it and there’s not even a stain on the innerspring after all these years.

♦  Simmons Beautyrest repeat customer.  The firmest they offer.  No pillow top.  No box spring; just a platform, which I prefer.

♦  Reclaimed wood bed from Living Spaces (like new, free on Nextdoor from some shop-happy Apple people).

 

Previous beds have been Cal Kings since the mid-'80s.  I've had to buy new everything, and Cal King size was much easier to come by than Standard, but I like the extra width.

I have a full size bed here, the mattress is an Original Mattress Factory Orthopedic Extra Firm set.
I love a very firm mattress which I find hard to get, this one is just right.
I have a 4 poster bed with finials that can be removed to turn into s canopy bed. It’s part of my beautiful Tell City Young Republic bedroom suite.

I have the same mattress in my second bedroom in the same size, it is a Sears Open Hearth suite

After having a twin size bed all my life, I got a queen size mattress about 12 years ago. I got it at Original Mattress Factory, and it is the best one I've ever had.

Grew up with a twin (of course). When I got my own place upgraded to a queen size - extra firm, still have that bed in the guest room today!

Moved up again to a King about 20 years ago.

had this for 20 years now, cost 1000.00 back then....

still holds up well, best mattress ever.....mattress' today only last 6 to 8 years, then recommended to replace...

its a bear to do, but flip and turn ever 3 months....keep a mattress pad on it always

partner has Simmons Beauty Rest on an adjustable platform.....legs and head lift, heated and cooling air flow, and massage....

my next one to consider would be a Sleep Number Adjustable...

King Size

I have a California King Size Serta Perfect Sleeper, from Sam's Club when they sold double sided mattresses. It does have box springs which have some give. You can still get these sets at Serta, shipped for free. They still sell double sided mattress, mostly not available in places like Mattress Firm. This set is about 10 years old and seems to have a lot of life still in it. I did add a 1 1/2" firm foam topper, not memory foam, because it is not a pillow top and I wanted a little more plushness. This set is some plywood sheets set on the floor for a pretty low bed. The small dogs can get on it that way. Always use a mattress pad for extra protection. Yes, you do have to flip these mattresses and rotate them for the most service.

I had a McRoskey Airflex mattress made in San Francisco for many years. When I bought it they recommended medium firm, not firm. About 20 years later it did wear out. But those mattresses are really nice if you can afford them.

FULL SIZE

1985 Serta Posture Care.
I really need to get a new mattress but I HATE shopping for them and really dislike the new super-thick mattresses which would require me to purchase new bedding (fitted sheets).
The 1985 Serta feels comfortable but the seams are starting to give way!

We have a Queen sized Sleep Number bed that I love. My other half likes his side a tad firmer and I like a softer setting. We have had the bed for 8 years now and was worth every penny.

Obviously putting a mattress in a plastic bag does not make it "new". I suspect that with the generous return/exchange policy many mattress stores offer these are probably the result. What do you think? </span>

Bill, I went to Mancini's for the mattress I purchased a year ago.  The store on Winchester across from Valley Fair was highly recommended and I was in and out of there pretty fast -- but I knew what I wanted.

 

Joe, I agree that anybody can wrap a mattress in plastic to make it appear new.  And isn't that something they say to do in order to kill off bed bugs anyway?  I wouldn't trust anybody on CL for a mattress.

I’m amazed that some have had their mattresses since the early-to-mid 1980’s! It really is true that they don’t make them like they used to!

Sleep Number Here

We got a Sleep Number from QVC - was a leap of faith having not tried in store. Their prices are great. It comes in several big boxes - easy to assemble. Truly the most comfortable bed we've owned. Cradles hips and shoulders so well - and you can adjust the firmness as you see fit.

I have a queen-sized Serta mattress purchased in April. Sprang for the whiz-bang adjustable frame, which is awesome. It has a vibrate-massage setting, which is heavenly. The only downside: It took three strong men to get the frame into my apartment. The thing is HEAVY. There is no way to move it even an inch or two without lots of help. It's a fantastic bed. No more backaches.

NovaLux memory foam from Costco; bought about 11 years ago, king size. On box springs from Ikea (about the only place that would sell springs without a mattress). We needed it b/c of the tight stairway upstairs. The ticking is starting to pill and split badly; its probably time for a new one.
