Could you tell me what washing machines you have and your previous ones and what your current and previous ones were like / the advantages / disadvantages?

Bosch WAW32560GB : Advantages : Drum light, Big 9kg drum, different programmes, High water level rinsing in some cycles, 1200 spin on reduced ironing, speed perfect, 1200 interm spins during rinsing, Easy care final spin 1200rpm Disadvantages : Normal cycle times take long, Balance sensor on separate spin cycle / rinse/spin cycle is too sensitive.

Hotpoint WT960 : Advantages : Blue lit display, high water levels during rinsing, quiet when washing, wool cycle 1000 spin. Disadvantages : Balance sensor, Fast wash 60 final spin 1200rpm.

Hotpoint WMA63 : Advantages : Cycle times, powerstream feature, 1600 spin. Disadvantages : No proper interm spin after main wash, Doesn't detect unbalanced load.

Bosch WFO2467GB : Advantages : Cycle times. Disadvantages : Can't think of any.

Hotpoint WD440 : Advantages : Deep rinsing, Cycle times. Disadvantages : Balance sensor, Spinning during drying which creased my school shirts.

Zanussi ZWF1631W : Advantages : Design, Cycle times, Jetsystem. Disadvantages : Can't think of any.

My old Bosch Exxcel WFX3267GB : Advantages : Cycle times, display. Disadvantages : Spin only cycle only did 1200rpm, Rinsing water level was low, Took too long to pump.

I bought my Bosch serie 8 in February and WT960 and WMA63 last year and WD440 in last August and Zanussi in late January. I'm gonna get rid of my WD440 because of the drying as the spin during the drying creased my school shirts.

I am assuming from the time of living on my own:

I moved on my own in Sept 2002... My first duplex had a 1986 GE WWA5800 washer and a 1988 Kenmore Dryer... I was gifted them from the prior tenant (who got them from his grandmother the year prior)... I used and loved them until Early sept. 2004 when I was a victim of the 2004 Hurricanes and lost 3/4 of my life

In Oct. 2004 I bought a MOL, $399 GE from Best buy.. It lasted 6 weeks before i returned it for a $409 MOL Whirlpool.... My mom got that about a year later

In August 2005 I whent in Sears and found a Floor Model Kenmore Manual Control (by Frigidaire) Front Loader for $399, Had been a display... I also bought a pedestal for a HE4t and plopped it on that with braces and such...

In August 2006 I bought my First new home and when I moved the Kenmore into it, it developed a leak, and under the extended warranty, sears came 5 times and always saw it leak, but we didn't know where from. Now here is where my fog comes in.. I was mad, and Sears offered to replace it... I whent into Sears and looked at Washers and the HE2t (the heater one) had JUST come out.. I mean JUST... Like 2 days before... I traded off the leaky Frigidaire for the He2t.. When i did this, I don't remember... i know my ex was trying to get me to replace the flooded kenmore dryer (that survived 4 moves and 2 floods by this point.. i said why replace) with the matching dryer...I refused

When i moved into that house, i specified a second washer/dryer hookup for my exs work clothes (he was a dm for a POPULAR chicken wing chain atm) and we got a brand new (with pedestals) WBV5100 GE Front Loader and DBVH510 Dryer (the newer crap made ones)... We used those until the HE2t came into the house and then a neighbor who moved in 3 houses down offered her Neptune touch screen set in exchange for my GE's because she hated the touch screen and they where not high enough... They where the 7500 series from 2003... I loved them as well.. I bought pedestals and lived in laundry bliss until the great christmas divorce of 2009...

In early 2010, I had to sell my dream house, and doing so, sold alot of stuff.. I managed tom park the Maytag's at my moms, my ex took the Kenmore dryer and a Roper washer i bought him and went on his merry way.. I took my HE2t and moved west...Bought a bosch nexxt 500 dryer

In late 2010 my job transferred me and I rented out my condo and moved AGAIN.... I had no choice but to leave my washer.dryer behind and never saw them again,as the tennants stole them when I told them nicely i was selling the place 6 months later..

My current place had a very generic Whirlpool DD set and I toughed it out for 2 months until I inherited a 1978 Maytag Top Load.. Which cinched my love for them

I bought a condo in OC and moved 4 months later, taking a new job.. I kept the Maytag and used the 1981 GE Dryer for a while.. Replaced the dryer with a Gas Samsung when the GAS GE melted my clothes... During this time, I inhertied a truck from friend back east and moved the rest of my crap from my parents, and took my 7500 Series Neptunes.. In that garage, i then had my 78 maytag, a samsung dryer and a matching 7500 neptune set...

In 2011 I got an offer from the utility to replace my top loader with a $400 rebate.. Not to leave money on the table, i found a junked hotpoint and bought my Current samsung on clearance for $500 (down from $1550 because it was not grey)... I sold the maytag for $50 to a friend *who* still uses it..

2012 I moved again and sold my condo, part of the contract was a washer and dryer and I sadly left the 7500's behind... I LOVED the washer.. The dryer was becoming a pain and I was looking at replacing it with an older Electronic Kitchenaid, but that never came to pass..

I still have the Samsung and it will be burried with me, as it has everything i want and warm/warm.. I have decieded another 70's maytag and a 7500 washer will grace my house again, along with another late 80s Kenmore dryer... I tried to fall in love with a belt drive and couldn't...

My own first washer was a GE filterflo.  I liked the filter pan but hated the noise!

Next came the 1997 Asko....loved it then and still love it now, 19 years old and still going strong.  No bells, no whistles, no chimes, no touch screens or digital displays, just 2 knobs and 4 buttons.

Last summer acquired a Miele w1986.  Very low use machine kept in MIL's basement until such a time it's needed.

I have had about every washing machine know to man in the past 40+ years. My absolute favorite was the TOL 1966 model Kelvinator washer that Robert has in his collection now. I love the way it washed and rinsed and loved watching it. It always put on quite a show. It was a pain in the ass to keep running and held fairly small loads and tangled and was rough on clothing too. You had to put a fairly full load in for it to not go out of balance when spinning too. Second to that was my Frigidaire 1968 or 1969 TOL set. The WCIL and DCIL. That was one of the fanciest sets I have ever had. Those went to Greg, no idea where they are now. The washer was a rapidry 1000 and the dryer would actually keep up with washer drying full loads. It did tend to lint my clothes and towels though, with the rough washing action. Nice machines though. Always wanted another pulsamatic Frigidaire with the vibrating agitator, but never ran across another one. I did have a set of TOL 1960 Frigidaires, but never fixed them up to use. I regret that, since I really liked the way those looked and I am sure I would have enjoyed using them. I also liked some of the old Norge washers and dryers too. If I could have ever found a 1958 TOL Norge washer to match the dryer I had, I would have been a happy camper! They really washed clothes amazingly well with no tangling or extra wear to the clothes or linting. The gas Norge dryers dried clothes quicker than any dryer I have EVER seen, but then they had a burner the size of a furnace on them too. They dried clothes quicker than you could wash them. I liked a lot of the machines I had in the past. The solid tub ones were my favorites. I did have a Frigidaire Rapid advance timer set too that I liked fairly well too. I got bored easily and changed machines frequently back in the day. Back when automatic washers were still fairly new, there were many different types and models that washed in unusual ways. It was fun to see the various ways they accomplished their job. I pretty much gave up on all that a few years ago and turned loose of most of the machines I had. Up until about 2 years ago, I used the Frigidiare 1-18 TOL rapid advance timer set and then a Maytag set of about 1996 vintage. I then needed a set that would wash and dry a king size comforter, so I didn't have to go to the laundromat anymore. So I bought the set I have now, an LG made set for Kenmore from Sears. I have had no problems with them so far and they hold more, are gentler on my clothes, promote no lint at all and spin them out practically dry, so drying time is a minimum now. The washer does take much longer, especially if I use the steam treat option, but then so does my new dishwasher. So I have adjusted to the longer time. I hope it lasts forever, but I am sure it probably won't. If I get about 10 years out of it, I will be content. Btw, I have had speed queen machines in the past too. I actually liked the solid tub models quite a bit, but have never cared for the machines they made from the 80's on. Too trouble prone. Now it seems they are the only top loader that is made much like the old school machines were and the only top loader that will rinse properly, if set correctly. My front load machine does an excellent job of cleaning and rinsing with a minimum amount of water and will rinse up to 3 extra times. washer and dryer history

My first washer and dryer set was the filter-flo. I would sit by it and listen to all the dramatic splashing sounds especially on the normal speed. My favorite was when the washer was on the small load setting with cold water. It was really sudsy. I enjoyed listening to the spin cycle too. My mom would use the minibasket even on the small load sometimes. I thought the washer was off balance when the rinse agitation on normal speed started. When I walked over to it, I knew that it was just the rinse agitation. I heard the downy ball floating in the minibasket. I now have a GE set from 2000. It is still running today. It has an electronic selector, cycle countdown, and push to start. I also have the matching dryer. Mind you, they're electric, as was the case with the filter-flo pair that I had. We'd wash everything from under the sun from lightly soiled knits and delicates, to heavily soiled sturdy cottons in both sets.

Since living away from my parents:

In Katie's mobile home:
1996 TOL WP washer: Quiet, reliable, excellent cleaner, kind to clothes(no shredding).
BOL Norgetag electric dryer: slow POS need I say more.

In our Townhome:
WP built Admiral POS. Noisy, mediocre cleaning, dumbed down temps, single speed so hard on delicates.
Another BOL Norgetag electric dryer, see above.

AND CURRENTLY IN OUR TOWNHOME, THE BEST EVER MOST BEAUTIFUL:
Speed Queen FL washer: commercial quality/built like a tank, OUTSTANDING cleaning and rinsing, superior water extraction, extremely quiet, very gentle on clothes.
Matching SQ dryer: JUST AS GOOD AS THE WASHER!

My list isn't too long to list...but it's hard remembering details about washers I used 20+ years ago... And it's probably not fair judging washers I used years back, since my laundry knowledge/ability--while falling short of many here--has improved dramatically over the years.

That said...

I have used what is provided for my use by whomever I'm currently renting from. Although if a nice, used washer at the right price crossed my path, it would probably follow me home...

The current machine is a low end WP DD from about 2007. I am, frankly, less than enthused--I have real concerns about the "Shredmore" effect. I think I have noticed some increased wear, although stuff isn't wearing out instantly. Although as I've said before here, the washer might not be a real problem. It might have merely pushed stuff over the edge that was already at the showing wear point.

Unfortunately, this washer also doesn't have a slow speed.

The other dislike is sometimes the running sound: the chugga chugga reminds me of a period of my life I'm trying to forget. (I used a KM DD during that time.)

The plus, though, is that this DD is probably more easily repaired, and those washers seemed durable.

And it is much better at washing than the previous machine, a WCI Frigidaire.

The Frigidaire was a lackluster washer--I shudder to think of how it would cope with a really dirty load. This Frigidaire was somewhat banged up, and had issues with going into spin. It might have been a belt, but the belt was supposedly almost new...or so I was told.

A few years ago, I used a Kenmore BD machine. It was old, and when it acted up, the ultimate solution used by the property owners was shifting washers about... But I was happy with it while it ran. I can't say it got stuff much cleaner than the newer machines--my laundry is mostly freshening, not removing stains/dirt. But I can say I really loved the lint filter, particularly when air drying in summer.

But...one thing that colors my view of the BD is sentiment. My mother had a KM, and it was fun using that machine...and hearing the classic BD running sound...

Right...

I maybe wrong on the models (some I don't actually know the model number of) but here goes:

*Only going off what I have had since I left home.

1st - was a Hotpoint, fairly standard 6KG 1200/1400 Spin - Mrs had this when moved in together (around 2007). This broke by way of would not stop filling with water, Mrs insisted this was because I used way too much bleach the cycle before. So ran out and bought...

2nd - BOL Beko, 5KG 1000 spin in silver about £200, washed excellent, spin was naff. Moved house with this... After a few months. decided wanted a bigger washer, so bought....

3rd - Hoover Vision HD 8KG 1600 spin - the spin was too high for the capacity (8KG drums were brand new to the market at this time). The outer drum cracked 3 (THREE) times. So as I was indecisive on what to get, MIL (who was staying with us after moving back from Ireland) ran out and bought...

4th - BOL Indesit 5KG 1000/1200 Spin machine. Did ok, when MIL moved out, decided I wanted bigger machine again, so bought...

*5th, Whirlpool USA TL machine (one with the coloured stripes on the control panel, was advised the clutch needed replacing, add this to the faff in getting USA Inlet pipes to fit out UK water sockets, it went into garage until I could afford more time. So bought...

5th (real 5th lol) Bosch 8KG 1400 Spin model WAS32GB something, probably one of the best washers I had, only issue was it's out of balance protection was a little over zealous

THEN THE PROBLEMS STARTED WITH THE NEXT ONE

6th - was happy with the Bosch, but saw the new super duper Sasmung Eco Bubble 12KG machine (the first 12KG one they did) colour screen, chrome door etc, wanted it badly. So got it, bosch went to sister.

It worked ok for 7 months (May 2013-Dec 2013), then all hell broke loose, the drum would not turn during the wash, it would intermittently and it tried and tried, then after so long, would flash up on the display 3E call service (motor fault). 6 YES SIX! Engineer visits (remembering it was christmas) bringing the wrong parts, replacing the motor, and then said it needed a new PCB.

Finally had enough, so whilst I was fighting tooth and nail with Samsung (and I mean tooth and nail), I bought...

7th - Hotpoint Extra 7KG 1400 Spin machine, this was a great machine, and if it wasn't for the fact I had the Samsung, I would have kept this.

Samsung eventually agreed to take their machine back, and refund. So I was looking for a new large 11-12kg washing machine. *Sold the Hotpoint on eBay (was only weeks old) got almost what I paid for it.

Then got...

8th - Whirlpool Ultimate Care USA TL (not the TL that was still in the garage). I loved the quickness of the machine, but, how anyone's clothes in the USA stay looking nice using those machines i'll never know, granted it was not a washer I was used to, but it was starting to make clothes look 20 years old (of course, all my clothes look pratically new, as us lot here know what we are doing with laundry). Plus it used far too much water.

So that went in the Garage. Then got,

9th - 12kg 1400 spin LG Steam washer, brilliant washer. Moved house with this (the TL's in the garage were gifted away, as I was downsizing).

Then boredom set in, and realised that 12KG was probably too big for the amount of washing I do.

So in February this year

The LG went to my sisters and I bought

10th - Whirlpool 8KG Supreme Care (these are still on the market), this had issues with shock absorbers about 2 weeks in , so got my money back and bought.

11th - Another Whirlpool supreme care, except this time, it was a 10KG 1400 spin model, as the price was too good to pass up. This unfortunately had the exact same issues with the drum support (they also were pulled off the market temporarily at this time, but was never confirmed exactly why). So got money back on that and used temporarily -

A 1990 Hoover Logic 1100 - I bought this off an AW member Rob last year, it lives in the Garage, to be used periodically, it's not big enough for day to day use, but will not part with it as I don't want it going to someone who would not appreciate a machine that old being in such good condition.

When I was refunded for the 10KG Whirlpool supreme care, bought the washer I have now,

12th - Samsung 9KG 1400 Spin Eco Bubble (linked below) all in all a good washer, did have some issues with the spin/noise when first got, had engineer out. But probably a bit hasty due to the hell went through with Samsung a few years back. But at the time, this machine was the only one I liked in the £500 bracket.

Kitchen Aid washer and dryer back in the 80's and 90's: Seemed to need quite a few repairs (so long ago I don't remember the details). Left them when sold the house.

Roper washer and dryer: The washer died a couple of weeks after it was out of warranty. Replaced them with-->

Whirlpool Duet HT washer and dryer (approx 2003 or 2004?):
**Washer has had the following repairs:
--replaced front rubber gasket and wire spring gasket holder
--replaced intake valves
--cleaned out pump twice (should do this more often--not technically a repair but it fixed a problem with draining)
**Dryer has had the following repairs:
--replaced the entire control panel (electronic)
--replaced the heating element

Pro's - washed and rinsed well, low cost, relatively reliable
Con's - ridiuclously long wash times, small drum, 1000rpm spin

Miele W562:
Pro's - reliable, washes and rinses well, quiet in operation, solid build quality
Con's - expensive to buy, 1300rpm spin is good but could spin for longer, 6kg so the drum could be a bit bigger

History of my washing machines

1st - Merloni Servis Easiwash 1000, lasted from about 1998-2000.
2nd - Hotpoint WM51P First Edition 800, brought on the same day the Easiwash was scrapped, lasted in my household 2000-2002. then to 2008 in my Grandparent's house.
3rd - Hotpoint WMA64 Ultima Extra in Zircon Silver, lasted from 2002-2007.
4th - Tricity Bendix AW1201W 1200 Electronic. 2008-2009.
5th and current - Miele W562 Prestige Plus 6, almost 7 1/2 years of sterling service...best and most reliable machine so far.

The first machine I can remember is a servis quartz can't remember the model but it just worked and worked up until one day bang it blew up and smoke came out this was replaced by an hotpoint wm52 which worked flawlessly for years this machine was too small come 2005 when mom had twins bringing the household upto 9 people so she bought an hotpoint ultimate wt960 7kg this lasted 4 and the bearings failed in 2009 it was replaced with a whirlpool 8kg 1400 spin 2 days after the 12 month guarantee was up the machines pcb board failed this was then replaced with a bosch excel 2004ish model lasted 18 months before a screw driver tore the drum up we then had a miele which leaked from the door every single cycle would refuse to spin sent this back replaced with another miele which worked for about 18 months before constant fault codes pcb had failed replaced with a Samsung diamond drum 4 years ago which has worked ever since

I had a worsh bucket and scrub board, no but seriously; A 1995 Maytag dependable care washer that I'm sure someone somewhere is still using.
Currently, a Maytag Bravos X top of the line. No comment.

The first machine I bought was in around 2004, a Zanussi FJ1296 from eBay costing a quid with bust bearings. Once they were changed, it ran for another 18 months but I had to move flats and so it was auctioned and made £40.

When I bought a house in 2006, I bought a second-hand 2 years-old Bosch WFL2260. While very reliable and tended to wash well, the rinsing was dreadful (especially with low water pressure) and it tended to gather mould in the draw. It only asked for a few door gaskets, several sets of motor brushes and a drain pump in ten years.

Vintage-wise, I have a Hotpoint top-loader, 1509/10, a water and energy guzzling beast but it a very fast washer, excellent rinsing, good spinning. It struggles with very stubborn stains, though. I rebuilt it completely and backs-up the machine below, which is a...

Hoover Logic 1200 "timeline" - another old machine reconditioned and is now being used daily, after the Bosch WFL developed a solenoid problem and it's remained in place, so the Bosch is up for sale. Works very well indeed, although the drum is a little small and it can be noisy on fast spin. The "spin cancel" and "delay timer" features mean that I can run boil washes on Economy 7 electric at 6am without annoying the neighbours.

Hotpoint 95490 - being rebuilt as a little project to get me away from work and the kids.

Bosch V696 - My gran's old washer dryer. Works lovely but needs a new solenoid; I'd rather move it on, due to lack of space
