What's the insert for?

I found this griddle for my ~1951 Frigidaire electric range and couldn't resist it. It's an exact match to the one offered for my model... However, I don't have a clue what the insert is for, nor does the seller... do you?

Hey have the same thing and have been using it for 50 years. The insert is for broiling. Lets the juices drip through when you use it under the broiler.

I was just a little kid when my folks got the Frigidaire Custom Imperial range, that came with it as wall as the radiant well broiler/roaster. We still use the griddle for pancakes every Sunday morning and the roaster is used quite a bit also. The range has been retired to the basement for occasional use, especially the rotisserie in the winter.

Now, If I could just find a matching set of '59 Custom Imperial laundry equipment to go with it, and as long as I'm dreaming, I'd like them in Yellow or Aqua.
