Sorry to be indelicate, but I'm home with the stomach flu and could really use some ideas for relief. It started yesterday but has gotten worse today.

My usual remedy is to have a popsicle, which is cooling and gets a bit of liquid into the system. Unfortunately, I have none in the house and am not up to a trip to the grocer.

Thanks in advance for your help, kids!

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well, Eugene. Do you have anything in the house with ginger? Ginger ale, strong ginger tea, or even crytallized ginger should all help. (The stronger the ginger the better.) Another stomach settler is white rice with a little cottage cheese.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

Hi Frigilux,

If you are not vomiting get yourself an anti-emetic like Maxolon. If you can't keep anything down, get your doctor to give you an injection of that drug. Depending on the severety of your nausea, that is about the most effective thing you can do. Buy yourself electrolyte popsicles or drinks - they are much better for your body than sugary coke or ginger ale. Especially if you are also suffering from diarrhoea.

Get well soon.

Ginger anything helps

This is proven. Whether or not Coke helps in restoring electrolytes when one is suffering from vomiting and diarrhea is subject more to culture wars than hard science. Since the intestines are able to re-absorb various minerals in with the glucose out of the bloodstream, I don't understand the passionate arguments against it. But this one has been argued up and down for decades and will be forever. Probably has more to do with resistance to the corporate brand name than anything else.
If it helps you, great. If not, then forget it.
I like to drink Ginger Ale when sick, myself.
Sorry you don't feel good, hope you get better soon.

Ginger ale

or Emetrol (a non prescription drugstore item.)

If it persists, Phenergan! which is a prescription.

Your blood glucose might be low. When my blood glucose is low, I get very nauseated.

Good luck, it's not pleasant.

Thanks, everyone! I have a huge hunk of fresh ginger and some Coke in the fridge. I would imagine that some ginger slices steeped in near-boiling water would make ginger tea, wouldn't it?

I had some really wonderful home-made ginger ale at a Mongolian-style restaurant in Minneapolis a couple of weeks ago and planned to find a recipe online. Haven't had time to do that. With all the suggestions to drink ginger ale, it would have come in handy, today.

GINGER

Ginger tablets from the "health" store ................. plus again at the health food store is what they call "nux vomica" they are tiny tablets that you put under your tongue and they are an herbal anti-emetic. They have DEFINATELY worked for me.

Ginger tea !

I have found (as well as studies) that steeping some grated or sliced FRESH ginger root in boiling water realy does the trick. You can add a little sugar or honey if you like. Do make sure that you keep your electrolyte levels up. Even if you are vomiting you should still take as much liquid as possible. This helps in two ways. 1, it keeps you from dehydrating. 2, It makes the act of vomiting easier if you have fluids. Much easier on your body than dry heaves!

Good luck and I hope that you are feeling well soon!!!!

Please everyone...make sure to wash your hands frequently!!

I used to do a lot of recreational/racing sailboating, and the word was that ginger is as effective in preventing sea-sickness as medications such as Dramamine - but you have to injest it well before boarding the boat.

I've found that just chewing on a slice of fresh ginger helps for mild cases of nausea. Plus, other than being a spicy, there are no side effects.

A medication which seems to work pretty well is transdermscop. These are dermal patches - obviously a more effective way of administering a medication when you can't keep anything down the gullet.

Another sailing hint: if you know you are prone to sea-sickness, but need to eat something, then try canned peaches. They won't prevent you from vomiting, but they are relatively more pleasant coming back up again than most other foods :-).

Sucking on a lemon helps cut the nausea.

Works well even if you do toss your cookies to get that taste and feeling out of your mouth!

FEEL BETTER! If this is the one that went around this area last week, it only lasts a day!

I pour a glass of Ginger Ale and put a teaspoon of ground Ginger into it. Watch the reaction in the glass when you do this. Then add ice and sip along.
Within an hour you'll feel much better. BTW, this is a very spicy drink, but it does work.

Alternatively, Coke over crushed ice works well too.

Green Tea with Honey

And cancel all calls and watch trash TV. Almost never, I put a shot of good Brandy in the tea with honey to go to sleep, but use as you feel fit if it's a hard days night.
