Went to store today and wow, meat case was BARE!  Kroger had a small amount of meat, Sam's was virtually empty.  95% of the cases were empty.  Luckily I did not really need meat, was looking for a 1/2 or whole pork loin, about the only thing I'm missing in my freezer.  Found a 1/2 but at $15 I passed.  Usually get a whole for $8-10 on sale.

Meijer only had

moslty Trukey products and beef. small spread of chicken, little pork. Got a 6 lb. pork shoulder. Made Paula Deen's "Lady and sons" pulled pork with it.

Was in Hy-Vee yesterday:

The service meat cases were full as were most items in the packaged meat.  That store gets it's pork from Hormel so still has some supply coming in.  One of the meat guys said it's getting tight because of all of the Smithfield/JBS customers now trying to buy from Hormel.

Grocery aisles were mostly full save for a few items.  Even the canned goods and baking supplies looked better.  Cleaning supplies and paper goods were a bit sparse but Costco is just a few miles down the road and they have plenty.

So far...

The meat cases at the supermarkets I go to are full. Plenty of beef, pork and poultry. I got a good selection of meat in the freezer, plus canned products. I'm good for at least the month of May.

I imagine if meat really starts to get scarce, plant based substitutions will skyrocket.

Matt, you might want to try Gordon Food Service for meat. I was in one of the Cincinnati locations on Tues., and they had some meats there. I didn't need any, so didn't check out what kinds they had.

They also had some paper towels and toilet paper, and plenty of bleach (Clorox and Array).

meat is the new toilet paper of pointless hoarding.

And here I sit with plenty of chicken breasts in the freezer and me in the midst of a Keto Fast.

It's been reported that meat may become in short supply with this virus. Meat supply houses are being effected with people getting sick and the meat not getting prepared for shipment, as a result the meat packing places are closing down and will be short supply.

I went to Key Food today and the meat selections were skimpy. A lot of cuts were missing. Also, there were many gaps in the shelves as well.

Although nothing as jaw dropping as Wegmans at the beginning of the pandemic.

Gordan's

Thanks for the suggestion, been there pretty picked over too.  Luckily I have WAY too much meat in my freezers, I'm really just looking to round out my selection with a pork loin.  Like to slice it this and make scallopini, or cut it thicker and pan fry  for a quick meal or simply  cut a chunk off stuff it with garlic and roast a section.

For got a few items yesterday when I was out so stopped in a couple of stores today Kroger was pretty well stocked, Aldi had curtains pulled over half the meat section.

Price Chopper was well-stocked yesterday but signs asked us to buy one pack at a time. Market Basket consolidated their meat section so it's about 1/2 the length it was, but it's well-stocked with a request of 2 packages of each (beef, chicken, etc) per transaction.

I don't get it with the local regionality of outages. For example, Walmart had at least 5 different brands of TP the other day yet Price Chopper had none (maybe 7 minutes away). Stop & Shop very low on meat (they're too expensive anyway!) but Price Chopper and Market Basket were well-stocked- each within 15 minutes. I'm sure it has to do with buyers at this point but....

Is it regional?

I don't get it! Was in WalMart earlier and meat cases were full, but no rice or flour and of course no TP. I bought a pound of Ground round and a rack of pork ribs. Beef for me is re-packaged into 1/4 # each and then frozen. Of course, cleaning supplies are also in short supply. I'm told that Walgreens and CVS are limiting TP sales to one package per person...?
I clean house and use at least two cans of Comet a week and that's even being rationed! As of May 1, I have 90% of my clients back and have only one free spot left. But I'm also lucky that many of my clients paid me-not to come- through late March and April, so I've been holding open spots for them, but have gained 3 new clients! Greg

Have not been to the WM since 3/22.  Neighbor up the road works there.  Mailperson had a piece for them mixed-up in my newspaper yesterday.  Walked it over to them hour ago, chatted briefly.  She said they're out of bicycles and TVs.  Beef & chicken, she said is beginning to run low but typically there are some choices.

Aldi today, everything looked stocked.  They even had bulk t.p. 12 pk.  An entire pallet of flour, but there were only a few bags of sugar.  They're still limiting the number of people in store to 20 customers.

What I bought and shouldn't have?  A banana cream pie.   short story:  half went in the garbage (toilet)  SHAME on me.

Unfortunately, it will get worse.  Eggs are being dumped.  There is a shortage of retail consumer packaging since those plants are closed.  Packaging for restaurants is different.  Since cruise lines, schools,  and restaurants are not operating or operating with less business, there is no demand there.

Around here (& the rest of the US), chicken flocks, both layers and broilers, are being gassed to reduce them.  People are not showing up to the processing plants to work (that's also around the country).  Again, with schools closed, milk demand is way down.  Farmers are having to dump milk in their fields.

I could go on & on why there is a shortage starting.  Living in small farm territory I see it first hand.

I found the Pork!

Stopped at Kroger today, didn't need much but found pork.  Got the pork loin I've been after, only a 1/2 for $12, and a 10lb pork shoulder.  The shoulder I did not need, but it was  the last one, on sale and I will use it at some point for 24 hour pork.

Overall I'd say the meat counter was half full or empty dependingnon your point of view.

Where's the beef?  Didn't Wendy's use to ask that?

Now YOU can ask THEM.  One out of 5 will say "we don't have any".

Eddie:  I dunno why they call this hamburger helper, it does just fine by itself.

I like it better than tuna helper, don't you Clark?

Clark:  You're the gourmet around here Ed.

Clark:  No meat in this?

Ellen:  You get plenty of meat at home.  Be polite, have some ketchup.

Clark:  Real tomato ketchup Ed?

Ed:  Oh nothing but the best.

Kroger on the other hand, had beef in both the service counter and prepack case.  They were however, low on

Marie Callender frozen entrees, which come from ConAgra, the 'food' version of WCI.

Thanks Eddie.  I thought that might be good for a snicker.  True too.

I can scratch-cook many of my favorites but it's a disproportionate amount of work/time for one serving so I fall back on frozen maybe 1/3 of the time.  The frozen dinner market is in a pretty sorry state.  Like the present appliance business, too much middle-management meddling, pricepoint and cost reduction emphasis.  Throw in seasoning abuse (mainly sodium) and shelflife chemistry and there's not a whole lot of tolerable choices left.  Watery mashed potatoes?  Come OOONNN.  What's the excuse for THAT?

I cook fresh all the time, can't recall last time I bought prepared food.  What I do is make enough for 2 or 3 meals, then just reheat. All except stuff I grill or that only takes a few minutes in the pan.

If I do chicken or chicken pieces I generally get 3 meals out of that sides and all- except veg's cook those fresh.  What truly drives me crazy are folks like a cousin of mine, she will grill 4 or 5 steaks at a time and just reheat, yuck!  Turn the damn grill on each time, it's a great waste to eat a rubbery reheated grilled steak.

Yes Rick...

The premade market is very scary. God only knows what ConAgra and other "WCI" food manufacturers have up their sleeves during this Orwellian Nightmare.

There is that old saying... "If you can't pronounce it, it should not be in your pantry or on your plate".

I'm thinking that the virus is going to cause shortages all over so if you have space to store it and money to buy it, you won't be sorry you bought it. I buy a lot of frozen Tilapia loins at Costco so I have stocked up on those.   Oatmeal, too.  I process it in the Cuisinart for about 5 minutes to  make oat flour for smoothies. Even though eggs are restricted to two dozen per visit, I have amassed a lot of them, currently 7 dozen, but I eat a lot of them. I might die of the virus, but I won't starve.

My local Wendy's had a notice posted at the drive through that due to supply issues, some items on the menu may not be available. They had burgers when I ordered. I guess I was lucky.

Meat is short around here, most stores have a limit of 2 packs of beef, and 2 packs of chicken.

I have 5 roasts, 12 lb of stew beef, and 20 lb of ground beef in the freezer.
I placed an order at a local farm so I’ll get 2 more roasts and 12 lb ground beef tomorrow.

I have no chicken at home, I ordered chicken direct from Perdue almost 6 weeks ago, it hasn’t shipped yet, hopefully soon. I have a coupon for their website do I should place another order now.

I don’t use much pork, but before this started I stocked up on bacon, sage sausage, and ground pork.

I have been wanting ham steaks and haven’t been able to find any

The Hy-Vee line of grocery stores (mostly upper midwest) has implemented limits of 4 packages of meat per customer.

An experiment:  Ordered 10 plain hamburgers (no pickles, condiments, etc) at McDonald's drive-thru. Put them in a jumbo ZipLoc bag and then into the freezer.  White Castle sells boxes of their burgers frozen that microwave well, so thought this would be a cheap way to mimic that.  If so, may just get another 10 and be stocked with burgers for awhile.

Beef here is a bit light in supply.

No strip steaks at the marker yesterday. Got a nice Hen instead to stuff with sourdough, crimini's, a bit of Italian sausage, celery, onion sauted in butter with poultry seasoning, sage, and herbs provence.
