Which KA Superba is a keeper?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Personally, I think the Superba 36...

the one in black/aluminum in your post. The built-in models of the mid-late 90s are pretty hard to beat.

Is

one more efficient than the other? Some units from the 90's still have R12 in them.
Nice reflection of the Beemer in the black one.
Home rehabber/flipper/realtor/broker?

R12 in the 90s

So far as I am aware, there should be no r12 in a box made after some point in 1995. My JennAir unit, basically a twin to that black KA in the ad, is a 1997 and runs R134 (it's rated at something like 925 KWh and I think it's $90-odd/yr to run out here).

The steel KA for sale above is probably a somewhat newer (prob. asian made 2003-ish) unit…might be somewhat more efficient, but they're probably both pretty comparable. Easily under $90-100/yr if the Energy Star rating sticker is still in place for you to verify. I'm sure there are more experienced people up here who'd chime in and verify that or tell me I'm misinforming!

Ok Art,

I know my Frigidaire Gallery 21 cubic ft. top mount I bough in August of '95 still had R12 in it.
Never failed on us in 12 years. We gave it away to charity.

Age is hard to say...

without seeing interior (and/or spec label)…exteriors looked pretty much the same forever. I'd guess 1988-ish to about 1996, not very common to find these without in-door ice/water dispenser, though.

Built In Refs

The KAs came out in 1990, overall they are very well built refs, generally better than Sub-Zeros, and differently better than about any other BIR especially GE.

BIRs over the last 20+ years are anywhere from $4000-10,000 new usually averaging around 5-7 thousand, plus expensive either factory optional or custom panels+ installation costs. custom wood panels can easily run $3000 or more.

KA and GE BIRs are very common with through-the-door Ice&Water dispensers.

BIRs are usually installed as part of an expensive remodel or new house build.

They can be a great buy used as there is very little market for them as used appliances.
