I was at Lowes just now during my lunch break. As I always do I tend to spend time in the appliance section before looking for what I need. I noticed the Whirlpool Cabrio. I thought these machines were like the Kenmore Oasis with the wash plate in the bottom of the tub. However they are a Fisher & Payskel (not sure of the spelling) re-labeled except the agitator is different.

The Whirlpool web site has no information in them. Just wondering everyone's thought on it.

I think there is a thread already going around about this machine.

F&P helped design the machines.

The Cabrio at Best Buy has the washplate like the OasisHE. I'm wondering if the washplate and the agitator are interchangeable. I couldn't see why not.

I was tinkering with the two machines at work today... The HE has completely different programming which is very similar to a regular toploader. The motors between the 2 machines are very similar (The HE uses less energy, yet spins faster)

We have both machines plugged in and I toyed with the Window lid using Jason's magnet technique, I finally got it to work on the Agitator machine and placed it into its demo mode, the agitator agitates with a long fast stroke, yet sounds like the Fisher & Paykel...

I would think that they are interchangable, but there would probably be something that would cause the machine to not work properly and cause an error code (kind of like what happened when the machine at work could fill up and stopped and popped up like 9 codes... LOL)

I think that im going to have to take a look at Whirlpools version as soon as we get them on the floor!

Interesting

I'd like to get my hands on a Cabrio/Oasis agitator and try it in my machine. I'll bet it will work in the Sheets/Towels cycle.

Check if parts are available already at www3.sears.com. The trick is whether the agitator base will fit properly in place of the pulsator disc. One would think the baskets are the same ... but maybe not.

The baskets are the same so I would think that the TA would fit perfectly, but dont quote me on that

The Cabrio Finally Arrived!!! Boy is it a pretty Machine... It looks to me that the tubs are the same between the two, but I dont think that the plate and agitator are interchangable...

PICS (took them with my phone, so they arent the best)!!

Very nice machine Bobby, looking forward to hearing how you like it. Thanks for sharing. Terry

Agitator/washplate

Some 15 yeras ago I worked at the production and engineering section of a local appliance manufacturer, and one of the washers line was Hitachi. I had the opportunity to travel to the washer factory in Japan, an incredible experience.

All Japanese washers were cold fill only, with no heaters. At that time the newest washers were all "fuzzy logic" controlled. One of the cycle options was "Automatic", where the machine selected water level, wash action, wash lenght, and so on. One of these features that amazed me most was how these machines automaticly determined the water level based on the drive motor torque feedback to the microprocessor. It was like a trial and error method, where the machine kept filling in stages and the washplate or agitator (there were both options) moved the clothes around. Many other aspects of the completely automatic wash cycles were also based on this torque feedback.

If the Cabrio has an automatic water level, it surely does it in this same way. It is just a guess, but would an agitator have the same resistance to clothes movement than the washplate? I guess not. Surely the washplate offers much less resistance at moving clothes around than the agitator. The fuzzy logic controller would obviously get a wrong feedback signal.

Just a guess...

Second look

I took a second look at the pictures. If I am seeing the panel words correctly (the pictures are somewhat blurred) the washplate machine has an automatic water level option (the highest setting on the water level selector) and the agitator model does not.

Do I stand correct?

We have a winner!

Yes, the agitator model does have the option of an automatic water level, or the standard 4 presets. I suspect the load sensing process is the same as the HE model. I also noticed that the tub on the agitator model doesn't have the "teeth" around the bottom edge of the tub like the HE.

Bobby, you have the original pictures. Maybe they are easier to read than the pictures that appear here. What do the panels actually indicate regarding water levels?

My best guess at what the panels read (top down):

Panel 1:
AUTO
SUPER
LARGE
MEDIUM
SMALL
LOAD SIZE?

Panel 2:
HIGH
MEDIUM
LOW
"ILLEGIBLE" (maybe EX/LOW?)
WATER LEVEL

Emilio

On the HE models (Panel 2), the water level is replaced with a spin speed modifier, as the water level is unadjustable on the HE models.

The speeds are:
HIGH
MEDIUM
LOW
NO SPIN

From the Whirlpool Rep: when on auto water level, the machine does a quick burst of water filling to the machine. The longer it takes the water to reach the sump to trip the sensor, the more water the machine fills with. all while slowly spinning the tub.

Thor, Yes the water levels are:

Auto
Super
Large
Medium
Small

Panel 2 is the tempreture options, and the first is the Soil Level.

Very cool, love that window lid model!!! I noticed this machine doesn't have ridges on the upper circulator column of the agitator, whereas the similar Oasis does.

As for the agitator/disk being interchangeable, I can't see why not. F&P uses a low post drive, and the disk is fairly high in the center, higher than it would be for a normal wash impeller. I pulled the cap off and found the familiar Kenmore 7/16" agitator mounting nut.

Just my 2 cents.

Quality of wash in the Cabrio washplate

What kind ot wash quality will the washplate produce on heavy soil loads does any one know? I am thinking of buying one of these . Also does the hot fill use the true incoming hot water temp if it 150 of so does it temper it down.. I hate that . Sudsman
