Those direct-drive simply have NO personality whatsoever. I just finished fixing one up that I got for free that had a bad motor and decided to watch it agitate.....YAWN!
The DD's have an interesting feature in their transmission that when they reverse to spin, the basket is not engaged (hence the neutral drain). They pause the motor which engages the spin basket, so when they turn back on, the basket spins.
If the motor is pausing, or if you're lifting the lid when it starts to pump out, the interruption will cause it to immediately shift into spin.
If it's going from agitate, then pause, then drain, but drain is spinning with no interruption from you, then it's definitely a transmission fault since the timer has no input to the transmission whatsoever.....it's all purely mechanical.
It's an ingenious design, it's just such a shame that the agitation stroke is so short and vigorous and that the machines are totally devoid of a personality!
