On some of these 120v models, IIRC, (models with an electric dryer) there was a switch to choose the washer OR dryer. On other models, the dryer's heater would not be energized while the washer was running.
For our friends in 240v lands, a 15 amp circuit on 120v can carry half the wattage of a 15a circuit on 240v.
120v x 15a = 1,800w
240v x 15a = 3,600w
Hence our USA full-sized dryers tend to use dedicated 220v, 30a circuits or gas. An ordinary household 120v circuit (15a for general lighting or 20a for appliances) has very limited wattage. Not useful for any high draw or high-heat (i.e. high wattage) appliances.
Gas dryers never caught-on in Europe in that those electric dryers are "plug-and-play" and their 2,500w +/- heating can be accomplished by plugging them in to any ordinary outlet there. vented gas dryers have an installation cost!
