Whirlpool World Washer

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Congratulations Louie on getting your machine up and running. I have to admit I think I would have had a hard time sleeping knowing that your new toy is awaiting it's first trial.

Best of luck with it! Can't wait to see the vid from it!

Whirlpool World washers

WP introduced this machine a few [ in the mid eighties ] years after they introduced the DD washers, these washers were cheaper to build and had a faster spin speed, but unfortunately they did not have great durability.

They were all built in Mexico and all had the same 2 cubic foot tub capacity. The machine was sold in four different cabinet configurations. They sold two different models with a rear control panels, they were both 24" wide had mechanical timers but came in a standard height and a shorter machine as well. They also sold the model that Louie has with the electronic controls at the rear and this last model had a SS wash basket.

The biggest weak area of these machines was a main water seal  that was at the bottom of the wash basket that often failed because of mineral buildup [ generally caused by too little detergent usage in harder water conditions ] and once water got into the bearings that was the end of the machine.

The new WP BD TL washers are a greatly beefed up version of these washers, bigger more powerful motor, stronger belt, greatly beefed up transmission [ note, both transmission designs have ALL plastic gears ] seal and main bearings. The other great thing about the newer BD washer design is that it is very easy to replace a transmission and seal and bearing assembly, so the new machines are no longer a throw away machine.

But overall these little world washers are fun and effective washers, you will have fun with it Louie.  If you need any parts we have boxes of them, we still recycle a few of these machines every month because of bad main bearings. [ Louie if you want to see if the motor capacitor was really replaced before just compare the code date on the old part to the manufacturing date of the machines serial #.

Thanks Rick. One thing I can say about the washer is how quiet it is. Even on spin it's quieter than any other automatic I've had.

Hey thanks for all  info John. We have very soft water here, so hopefully those seals will hold up a bit longer. The capacitor was replaced before I got this machine. It looked all dented, while the rest of the machine underneath was pristine.

very cool there

ultramatic/louie!!!

it really looks amazing. you did an outta sight job on that little washer!!!

it's just too bad you aren't closer to me, because i've been thinking about getting a used portable for one of my cousins. or at least mentioning a portable washing machine to her, the next time i see her. i think she might be interested in something like this, due to her situation & since she lives in an apartment and it's just her & her 2 kids now.

anyways, you did a GRRRRREAT job on that little whirlpool!!!

;o)

Hey thanks Christina! It was an easy fix. If it were a seal leak, it would had been a goner. If I were to recommend a compact washer, I think the model that came after this one, or the one before would be a better bet.

Fun Videos Louie!

Thanks

It looks like a very good cleaner!  Love that long wash!

That motor really gets a work out on this machine.  I think the rest and cooling down period is actually the spin.

Are you going to keep this as a second or third washer?  Again I think it is such a fun machine.

Thanks for the videos!  Fun!

Oh the Super Wash is even longer, at 18 minutes. Glad you liked the videos, even though they were a tad too long. Next vids I make I'm going to edit them. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with the washer, but a neighbor saw it and wanted to buy it on the spot. So down it went to the 13th floor, to it's new home. Stay tuned, another one is bound to pop up sooner or later.

A side note. I always thought Whirlpool built this machine for itself and Kenmore. But I found versions of it carrying the General Electric and Crosley badges. I noticed the Crosley version had fewer cycles.

Hey Louie-
Do you know what the spin speed was on that machine? I know it was a fast spin. Just curious about how high it was.

WW Motors And Spin Speed

The motor sounds like it is working hard but it stays as cool as a cumber through those generous wash cycles, I have NEVER seen a motor fail on one of these washers. Many guessed that all that stopping and reversing and starting might be hard on the motor but in reality it does not hurt it at all.

The spin speed is around 800 RPMs

The new VWM top load machines from WP are a greatly beefed up version of these machines.

Mine is kind of weird

Mine is the LCR7244HQ0. I noticed something weird. The suspension rod supports have surface rust. (I sanded and paint/primer over it) Something weird I noticed is the gearcase hub/bell where the brake solenoid is has surface rust. However my Lip seal and bearings are not bad??? I saw that then filled it and drained it then tipped it over and there was no water. I ran affresh in it and a BUTTON OF SLUDGE AND RESIDUE INSTANTLY APPEARED. I feel like I saved this one just in time. I used to have the Kenmore one 110.49722990. but it rusted out and my dad recycled it. The bearings were not bad on that one either. Being stupid thinking I was never going to get another one I did not bother begging my dad to remove the gearcase. Serial number indicates Manufactured April 1999. I don't have any water leaks. I think I should replace the lip seal though so I don't have to go through the nightmare of saving up for a gearcase in the event I ruin this one by attempting to take it apart to replace the bearings. The Kenmore one lasted 3 years 6 months on the back porch uncovered through the summer heat then winterized through the snow. I use this machine for smaller loads. I normally use my LG WM2801HW or WM2277HW or Maytag FAV6800AWW or Whirlpool GVW9959KQ2.
