Bought a White Westinghouse washer on CL. Works fine but, when it starts to spin it makes a very loud squealing noise. It continues this until it gets to full spin. It is very loud and anoying. Does anyone know what this is and how I can fix it?

nail?screw?hairpin?bra strap?coins???????

Is it a top loading washer or front loading? There may be something caught inbetween the inner and ouer tubs.

Jay--

You'd do well to consider the unique operational squeal of your White-Westinghouse a part of its charm and character. Nothing says "I love vintage appliances!" like the floor-shaking thunder of a Frigidaire 1-18 or the sub-woofer-like growl of a mid-60's GE Filter Flo.

We take pride in yelling litanies of interesting facts to startled friends in our kitchens as the vintage KitchenAid dishwasher roars deafeningly in the foreground.

To alter such eccentricities is analogous to painting over beautiful woodwork or laying lime green shag carpeting (you stand accused, Mom!) over hardwood floors.

So, next time your washer kicks into the spin cycle, savor that raucous squeal as if it were a fine, aged wine. Or you can check to see if the belt is slipping.

That was fantastic

Thanks Frigilux. I will take the back off tonight and watch the belts and listen. The only reason Im concerned, as I dont mind it and though the furry ones bark their heads off, I am planning to give the pair to my niece as a housewarming. Its just the right size for her. The dryer works great. The washer has programmed wash for hot warm and cold which makes it so easy to use. So I want to make sure she is comfortable with them. Thank you all again.

White westinghouse noise in spin

The first thing I would look for is the drive belt. The belt gets oil on it and from wear the fabric wears off the sheeve area and the noise associated with the clutching slip of a worn belt is a high pitched squeal. They first used a Pirelli belt and upgraded to a Goodyear belt and they lasted longer.
