At my workplace-the transmitter site-the same fuel oil used for the generator(Cat 3816)is used for the boilers. The plant uses about 15,000 gal per year-so no worry of it going stale. Our fuel is stored in two above ground concrete tanks.and a fuel pump is also available to fuel deisel powered company vehicles-truck,tractor and two "Gator" type utility vehicles-all run on deisel.-and a forklift.A gaspump and gasolene tank are here ttoo, for the company cars.

oil heat is almost unheard of int he west.

Heating with heating oil is almost unheard of in the west. From the stats I have seen, fewer than 1% of the people in Denver use oil heat, and once you get out of town, it's probably lower.

That "<1%" is probably for folks who use kerosene heaters on occasion.

Most heat here is natural gas, as we've got a lot of it in the west. Out of town, propane, wood, coal...

I do wonder for remove homes in Wyoming and other places how many are not grid supplied, so may use diesel for generators, but I have no data.

After Hurricane Ike we considered a backup generator for our house. It would have cost us about $9,000 installed and would run on NG.

But then I thought about it. We have pretty frequent power failures in our area, but none last more than an hour or two. The hurricane previous to Ike was Alicia in 1983. So I reasoned that we could buy a generator now and then maybe wait 20 years until another hurricane strikes this area. In 20 years will the generator we buy today still be viable?

After Ike we didn't have power for 10 days, but fortunately a cold front came through the day after Ike so we had temps in the 60's & 70's through most of the power failure. I considered that very lucky.

And after Ike the chorus of generators running in the neighborhood was like a choir of lawnmowers. It made it very hard to sleep. Most of the generators were those portable units people had on their driveways.

And I also remember the long lines of people at HD & Lowe's after the power came back on trying to return all of those generators too! I think because of the wording of their return policy they had to take all those generators back and hand out refunds! They have since changed their return policy and print it right on the receipt!
