Why Modern Cars Need Master Switches

The thing that gets me is steer by wire and brake by wire on the Tesla Cybertruck. While electronics can be made to be very reliable on vehicles, still want the steering wheel and brakes to be physically connected to the master cylinder and steering rack. Throttle by wire is one thing, but brake and steer by wire is a whole other thing. If there were to be a failure with brake and steer by wire, it would be extremely fatal. We will see how brake and steer by wire stands up to the test of time.

I forgot that John L. That must be the remaining 10% of the vehicle with Ford. They're good with sending emission software updates and recalls, at least to the first lessee or owner. My neighbor's wife had a 2018 Pacifica, and she liked the Explorer better, she thought. So their friend in used sales of most makes had a 2022 Explorer XLT awd with 36,000 mile on it in 2023. It was a good deal because of higher mileage. Carfax stated minor collision damage to rt. front fender, but who knows for sure? It ran and performed well then suddenly the screen began acting up, so the audio and climate controls were sporadic. They weren't aware of any software updates or recalls, etc. so they traded it to the same friend's dealership for a 2024 Pacifica loaded with leather, V6, and their payment is lower.

Keep in mind most of the electronics in a car like the engine and body computers because they control the engine operation and the emissions have a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on them at a minimum.

These parts are extremely reliable and anything having to do with a safe operation of the vehicle Will come under the scrutiny of the highway traffic safety administration if there are problems on a regular basis

Unfortunately, there is not this type of scrutiny on major appliances or consumer electronics. They can have 90% of them fail within five years on a particular product with very little recourse unless there is a safety hazard or a fire hazard involved.

And this is why strict electrical codes and regulations have been mandated on consumer home products.
Polarized line cords, wiring size, fusing or circuit breakers, etc.
Unfortunately, when a lot of "vintage" products were made, they would not pass current regulations.

Many a time I've had to re-wire, modify, and add proper fusing to antique radios, etc., before the customer got their stuff back.
I certainly didn't want a Liability Suit to deal with later on.

As for this "drive by wire" stuff, to hell with that!
I, and surely most people, want to be able to "feel" the road through the steering wheel.
