Nice units everyone, that Packard Bell is one i've never seen or heard of,Nice cabinet,I repaired and sold used window units in the 80's,so I'm familiar with most of them, I remember that particular Airtemp very well, all the ones I've seen were the one ton 110v models, very well built, some friends of ours had one and at the same time a '73 Chrysler New Yorker,I remember that emblem, must have been around '75. Douglasdc6, I had one of those semi-hermetic Carriers,I never got to use it but did get it running,If I remember right it was rated at only half a ton and ran on 220, weighed a ton but was missing the outside cover, was similar to the unit in the in the movie "Seven Year Itch" that they had in the kitchen.

Good to know about the Tecumseh compressor terminals,If I ever find another one,I just bought two new LG's a month ago and one already died and is going back, The Friedrich that it replaced is back in the window,it's only about 3 or 4 years old,has an LG compressor in it, will see how long it lasts,If it dies I can put the fan motor in the 97 model it replaced, those were still made in USA.

I think Chrysler was the market leader for casement window a/c units. All the Chrysler Airtemp units I have encountered(home use and automotive) have had very cold air coming out of them. They were really good.

Maytagmark,

I forgot to mention, The nut terminals only apply to the old 1650 rpm tecumseh compressors in use from the 1960`s on down.

Its ashame you are having problems with youre L&G units - the L&G `s made for sears appear to be getting very good ratings I`m just wondering if the L&G`s made for sears have higher standards then say the ones made for home depot.

Also if I remember correctly the chrysler airtemp window units had a special coating in the pan to help prevent it from rusting out - Sure wish the old friedrichs were that way.

douglasdc6, My '59 Friedrich that I retired in '99 lost all it's freon, might have been the terminals but I was thinking it was the condenser coil,It was working one day and out of freon the next,The pan was getting pretty thin from rust, Do you remember the '60's Friedrichs that had the Selectronic controls, I had one in the late 70's,it had three rocker switches at the bottom of the panel, one for on and off,one for fan only or cool and one for automatic or cont. fan,and two thumbwheels, one for the thermostat and one for the variable speed fan. The newer ones seem to have a beefed up pan but what good is that if the compressor is junk, the old ones kept going even with the compressor about to fall out.

Yes , I`ve seen a few freds with rockers , They were neat to say the least.

Back in the 50`s 60`s & 70`s it seems like friedrich & fedders pretty much had most of the market.

Don`t know how true this is but I was told Friedrichs cost about 50 percent more then other brands back in the day.

I can relate with you on the new units - I`ve never ben much of a fan of rotory compressors - being they run so hot - there`s no way the motor windings can last.

Amana not very vintage

This one has the old style compressor. 1982. I also have an old Emerson Quiet Kool but don t have the pics on here. Would love to see the old Philcos. And love the old GE thinlines.

If I get time this weekend I`ll post pictures of all the old 1950`s window units I recently saved from a long time abandoned apartment complex they are now tearing down.

about 7 a/c units in all.

These little guys need major TLC but at least they are safe for now.
