Windows 10 Latest Update Creates an Issue

Since purchasing a new laptop a couple of years ago, I've been using "Open Office" as an alternative to paying for Microsoft's Office suite of applications.  The "Open Office Writer" has been working fine as a substitute for "Word," but today as I was hoping to print up my list of addresses for holiday cards, I can't even get Open Office to launch.  I'm 99.9% sure this is a result of a Windows 10 update that happened within the last week.

 

Is anyone else experiencing this?  I don't know how to restore Open Office, but have a feeling I may have to reinstall it.  I just don't even know where it came from.  I had help in setting it up in the first place.  Any advice would be appreciated.

YES .....

I'll vouch for both. Open Office is fantastic. And, Libre Office can open and save in just about any file format. Have used both extensively and no need to pay Bill for a word processor program. Both can also save as a .doc or .docx as well.

 

But I now use GDrive for everything. No need for installed programs and can retrieve and edit from any device.  However, this morning Google was down worldwide and you could not log into google accounts. But, I had set my GDrive settings to keep a local copy some time back ..... so I was not dead in the water. 

 

I would just go to Open Office's website and download the new version. When it installs it will id the older copy and overwrite itself. No need to worry about any of your created files.  I updated OO a few times in the past and it never stepped on my content.

Thanks for the link.  I have version 4.1.5 currently so it needs updating.  BUT -- after several repeated attempts, the install wizard keeps telling me the installation has been interrupted, even though I closed all open applications as instructed.  The only option in the wizard box is to click "finish," which aborts the whole process.    ARRRRRRGGGGGGH!

I schedule my windows updates towards the end of the month. After allowing updates to enter and apply themselves, I will go in and delete them. Takes 95% of the updates out and system returns to normal operating status. Takes about a half an hour to complete but well worth it for another month.

Easily Fixed

Thanks for the advice on deleting updates.  When I got this laptop loaded with W-10 I learned that there would be no opting out of the update pushes.  I resigned myself to crossing my fingers that nothing would be messed up.

 

So as it happened, last night as I was talking to my tech-friendly buddy, it occurred to me that, due to hauling my laptop around over the last few days, perhaps I hadn't shut it down since this most recent update went out.  Restarting the laptop restored my Open Office to proper operation.  I'm back on track to having cards in the postal system within the next day or so.

I have the same problem

with edge and chrome shutting down automatically. Why does it do this?

I HATE Windows and MS. All my computers run Linux but have a few with W10 to use with old programs I might occasionally use. Last week is a prime example of how MS screws up things and wastes hours of my life. I have my Christmas card mailing list saved in an Excel spread sheet along with some holiday envelope templates. opend up W10, took 20 minutes to do it's updates, only to find it took it upon itself to delete my original Office suite and replace it with an online version. It removed all my files with it. Did a google search and found this to be a common problem.

Had a few older Excel lists on a back up so all was not lost but it took me hours to learn how to do envelopes in Liber Office. Normally it takes me 15 minutes to print the envelopes this took me half a day. Did I say I hate windows- now I have 1 less reason to keep it around except for 2 odd ball programs I rarely use.

Join the club. I dumped IE for Opera so far back you paid a yearly fee to Oslo. Worth. Every. Penny.

I tolerated Windows until EOL for Win7 was announced and I got a look at 8. No thanks. I've been Linux ever since. I have Win10 on one laptop as a company I worked for required it. With each newer version of Ubuntu LTS more and more supposedly Windows ONLY software runs on it just fine. Web-based applications that supposedly ONLY run on Chrome have all worked just fine so far on Chromium.

Matt, I couldn't agree more.  The MS team is made up of myopic, inconsiderate slobs. 

 

I have an iPad that I use occasionally, and about a year ago I switched from android to an iPhone.  While I'm not saying Apple is a whole lot better, they definitely take the end user into consideration far more than Microsoft has ever done, and I've never had any issues after an iOS update. 

 

This isn't much different from Betamax and VHS.  Betamax was first on the scene and a much better system, but the cheaper, second-rate VHS technology cornered the market.  The only difference is that Betamax quickly disappeared, while iOS continues to retain viable market share with its vastly superior technology.

Windows 10 updates can be deactivated.

Not long after I installed Win 10 3 years ago, I was balls deep in a quick trading scalp and Windows decided it was conveniently the perfect time to update and restart the computer. It got disabled after that.
